Default 220whp 7700rpm oil pump recommendations

A 1.8l Miata engine being run at 220whp and a redline set to 7700rpm. What are the thoughts here on stock oil pumps? Thank you all in advance.

This is straight from Emilio at 949 Racing....Oil pump - The stock oil pump uses sintered metal gears. Good wear characteristics and cheap to manufacture but low tensile strength. This becomes a problem when the cranks starts to flex withe oil pump being driven off it. All cranks flex minutely even at idle then more as RPM increases. Again that rod ratio comes into play, the power pulse is short and sharp. Add force (F/I) or RPM and it begins to distort the crank. The forged OEM crank becomes a worthless noodle at about 8600rpm but starts to dance well below that. This or big F/I power pulses are what explodes oil pumps. For N/A builds below 7000rpm, stock gears are fine. Low power <7000rpm <190whp F/I or N/A <7400rpm, you can get away with stock gears but have no "insurance". For high power F/I or high RPM N/A builds, billet oil pump gears are a must.

Unless you have head work, back down the rev limit and save the money.

I am running about 220whp with closer to stock 7200 rpm. I do have a stock oil pump, but recently aquired the SuperMiata billet damper. Will I be OK just running the billet damper for now?

I am planning on eventually doing a rod and oil pump upgrade with a swap to a NB head, but that will be a few years out.

This info could fold back into this thread:
Rev Limit Poll

Perhaps the link between Power, Redline, Oil Pump is the reason Mazda lowered the rev limit on Mazdaspeed?

Sounds like this means that when we pass 200 HP at redline, we should consider moving from 7200 to 6500 as well.

And a question: would it matter if one uses the soft rev limit instead of the hard? Soft makes car feel better, but could it be harder on the crankshaft?

This was my thought. The long blocks are identical in terms of durability with the NA. More so if you factor in the gentler ramps of the 5A cam compared to the 6D (VVT). The TB no longer being the concern, it has to be the oil pump Mazda was worried about.

Related question:

How do you determine if you require the chromoly, high flow, or extreme high flow pump?

Mazda\Ford\Mercury Oil Pumps ? Boundary

And maybe if Emilio wants to chime in on how the supermiata oil pump compares or differs to the boundary pump so we can make a better decision on which suits our requirements. The description seems to match the high-flow boundary pump.

Was running 280whp (mustang) with a 7200 redline with no problems. Now, maybe I was right at the limit, but just an FYI for everyone. BTW, installing a Boundry in the current build for 300+ and 8k.
