I recently added a larger oil filter to the Miata.

Old filter: Purolator PL14612
Specifications:
Anti-Drain Back Valve Yes Height 2.93

Oversize Filter: Purolator PL14610
Specifications:

All the specs are the same, except for an extra .6" of length for more filter element. It fit on my 1.6L with plenty of room left. I don't have an OEM oil/water cooler, though I think there's enough for those who have one. The PL14610 is out of the Mazda V6 from the Millenia, IIRC.

My oil pressure goes straight to 60PSI cold idle, whereas it used to be about 45-50 PSI cold idle.

That filter also fits my Xterra, that's how I found I could use a bigger one. Did the same thing on my Kawasaki EX500, which also uses the 14612/14610. Makes buying filters easy.

If you track your car I am curius what it does to your oil temps.
Why does pressure increase with a larger filter? Also hot?

It probably doesn't do much in terms of changing oil pressure, but the filtering capacity will definitely be increased. More filtering element.

What kinds of temp and oil pressure increase did you see? I would think a larger filter would do the opposite of what you describe. Less pressure(minutely) and lower temps because of the increased oil capacity. Though this is just my assumption, which may or may not agree with actual measurments and data.

Does replacing the oil filter with the smaller one cure the problem? That's the first thing I would try to pinpoint it to the filter. Just to be positively sure.



Nissans and Mazda use the same threads for their oil filters. I'm sure there are other manufacturers that use the same, but for sure Toyota is different.

Some of the newer Hondas use that filter too, IIRC. Matter of fact, when I was a lube tech we used to use the bigger filter in lieu of the smaller one all the time. I didn't realize this was such new info!

I used to use OE Acura Integra GSR filters on all my built BP engines. They were large and I never had any issues.

I see you got a Z24, yeah? I just so happen to have a intake mani made by Venom for it. It was a display item at the shop I used to work at.

Topic: Yeah, one of the garages I worked for only stocks the larger filter and not the smaller one. I think the smaller PL14612 cost more than the larger PL1460 also.

Yup. I use the same filter, largely because I had one left over after I sold my Integra. In the Mobil1 catalog, it's M1-104. A tad larger in both diameter and height, but fits perfectly and has the same pressure relief and drainback valve.

The NAPA "NASCAR Select" #91365 is the stock size for the Miata; #91357 matches in all diameters (inner, outer, gaskets, etc), but adds 0.9-inches in height. - Both cost $5.
