Default Rods or no rods?

So Eric ordered the engine build kit today for the white miata and it doesn't come with rods. We're planning on making 250whp or so. I say we should get some carillos ($369) to be safe since the whole engine build is a good amount of money and it'd suck to lose it all to a stock rod failure. He thinks we'll be fine on the stockers.

Since you guys all have experience with built motors, what do you think?

With the price of rods dropping these last 3 years, you'd be silly to open up a motor and not put in some good ones.

Maybe used, but 369 for carrillo rods doesn't sound right at all. They are more like that a piece for the H beams.

SO, I'd look into rods for sure. 250 is fine on stockers probably right around the limits, but you'll want more.

Also detonation at 250 will kill ****. So, might as well do it.

The Mtuned ones are great. I've been running them for a few years now.

One of the few regrets about my build is I didn't put rods in it. Get the rods. 250 hp will eventually turn to 300, then 350 and so on.

Honestly pretty much all the comprimises of a built motor are in the pistons. You have to look at oil consumption and all at that point, though modern forged pistons are pretty sweet and DDable in that regard.

I dont know off the top of my head, but arent M-Tuned rods lighter than stock? If so, then you have a significant benefit there in and of itself for your 350 dollars, nevermind the extra strength and protection for the rest of the investment.
