Ive owned my 01 Miata with AVO turbo kit for exactly one week now.

Ive fixed a lot of stuff on this car, ordered in a lot of new goodies and its been a great experience so far!

One of the things that bothered me on this car was how the air intake was made from several different pieces, drilled, tapped, and then later the holes were covered with electrical TAPE !

Because piping/ducting after the mass air flow sensor is so important to not have any leaks, I knew I had to redo this intake at some point.

Here is what the old intake looked like:


Im not sure why this intake was in such bad shape, but some of the elbows were not even circular, they were squished :


So, luckily enough I had a air intake that was from AEM for a 00-03 Focus. It had the perfect number of 90 degree, 45 degree bends to fabricate my replacement air intake:


After cutting, test fitting, cutting some more I was able to get the right angles for the tubing:


Heres what the finalized intake looks like:


Now, Im not too happy with the number of couplers this intake has for such a short piece of tubing, but this is the best I could come up with in my garage. Im going to take the intake and have the center section welded up later so the only couplers are to the MAF and to the turbo later.

Id also like to cut the opening behind the drivers side headlight, use some extra 2.5 inch tubing and a conical filter to make a true cold air intake. The filter would ultimately be put right behind the drivers side fog light inside the bumper cavity. Ill post up more photos after I get that finalized.

I think my next project is to add on a recirculate kit from the blow off valve to the intake.
