I'm having an issue with something i'm trying to do on another project.

I'm looking for 98-02 Mazda 626 V6 solid lifters. I'm reasonably sure that they're the same thing used in the NB heads.

So where the HELL can you actually buy them new besides potentially at the dealer? I can't find a listing for them anywhere. I thought i was on to something when i found that Rockauto stocks lifters for my 04 MSM. Imagine my surprise (I am Jack's complete lack of surprise) when i saw that RockAuto thinks my MSM has hydraulic lifters.

My hopes are that:

1) Someone will come through with a set of KL solid lifters from a junkyard by friday

or

2) I can get a set of lifters out of a late BP, and then find a source for new ones for the other 8 that i'll need.


Otherwise on Friday, i'll have to see if i can convince a vendor to sell me 1.5 sets of Mazda Motorsports shim-under-bucket conversions.

I know it's a vague-ish post, but ideas, discussion, links to where to buy, etc etc?

EDIT: contact V8Roadsters. Their K8 solid lifter project is aborted and I believe the guy is selling some of the valvetrain goodies.

Unfortunately, they're $21/lifter through Mazda, and i'm NOT paying $504 for lifters, on top of potentially $250+ for some damn shims.

So yes, i would also be curious where to get shims for cheap.

My thought is that worst case scenario (and i'd like to avoid this, since i think shim-over-bucket is just fine for the 8500-9000rpms i'll be turning) i can purchase the shim-under-buckets for $300 if i can get a vendor to sell me 1.5 sets. In the case of ordering these, are shims reasonably priced?


I'm arriving at this dilemma because i just ended up with a huge set of cams, and didn't trust the cams + Interprep springs to play nice with the HLAs in my Millenia heads. (Huge amounts of seat pressure + high lift and ramp = HLAs getting beat to hell and back.)

Did they have that documented somewhere? K8s have different valve and retainer sizes, and i'm not sure if that translates into different diameter lifters or not.

I did send them an email, though.

This is all I have on Shandelle's V6 build. Not much. I only found out about him indefinitely postponing that project when I ordered my driveshaft from him. Shame, he was planning on some high RPMs and had a nice dry sump setup in the works.

What are you using to get your 24piece shim under bucket for ~$300? All I know of are the 16 piece supertech stuff at ~$350.

How about you buy 2 4cyl kits and sell the extra 8 to me? hehe.

I am also running interprep's springs but stock cams/valves. Allistar said 8k would be fine on the HLAs so that's my number. I wouldn't trust the ford clutch much higher than that anyway, I'm paranoid though.

Yeah i found that thread... not a whole lot there. Very interesting though. I'm only spinning to 8500-9000 for now. Once i get the next bottom end in next season i'll probably try to push to 10k.

Confirmed, MiataRoadster will sell 1.5 sets for $320 shipped, so at least i have a backup plan, but would still rather go with shim-over-bucket for less money if possible at the moment. I don't have a whole lot of interest in a $1200 set of heads at this stage of the build. :(

Lash caps are not that expensive (e.g. Supertech Lash Caps Miata,Lash Caps - 6mm Valve Stem Diameter - SummitRacing.com) and if you have a builder that grinds his own it not that complicated to get right either.

Good find concealer. I would have gone that route definitely for $320shipped. I spent at least 8 hours cleaning the gook out of the HLAs. Would have taken a lot less time if I realized they easily come apart, live n learn.

I'm going to ask the machine shop what he wants to do about that when i drop the rest of the stuff off. I was stupid and forgot to give him valve seals when i dropped the heads off, so i need to make a trip there anyways. Figured i'd have him dump the new springs and lifters in there, and set the lash while he's at it so i don't have to deal with it.

Appreciate the links! Prices seem similar to what MiataRoadster is charging.


It's a weird mutt of a motor i'm building, so i guess i won't be mad if i have to go that route.

KLZE bottom end, Millenia oval port heads (have the better locks and revised cam caps), CZT 218 SLA grind cams, Interpreps, Shim-under-buckets (i guess), 626 dizzy blockoff cap, Gixxer 1000 ITBs and injectors.

All attached to an MX3 GS trans, all being dumped into an Escort.

Yup. I'm dumb.

I have not built the head for my 1.6 yet, but have bought the cams, and did some investigating with lifters from ford. These fit, I am in the middle of the range as far as adjustment goes, (have dummy assembled and measured, will be able to get the clearances I'm looking for) they are lighter, and have much less to go wrong. The lifter is the adjuster in the Z-Tech motor.

You know, i've read smatterings about these on the Probe/MX6 forums, and i've only seen one person get the ***** to do it, and he said it was a major pain in the ***.

I do like the idea, though, and i'm happy you brought it back up. I'm going to bookmark that in my build to revisit next year when i go back through the heads. (Porting, valves, Ti retainers)

FSDE's have the same lifter also, any 4cyl 626 or protege from years 2000+ are a good donor.

HRM... that makes things more interesting. I could easily get 24 lifters out of the junkyard in about 30 minutes from those, then. Makes my "bounty" i'm offering of $100 for 24 solid lifters a bit silly if i can do it myself in 30 minutes for $10.

Why didnt you say something on CP about it, I happen to still have a set of KLG4 lifters and shims in a bag in my garage. Let me go out and double check to make sure though. EDIT: just checked and I do still have them

Because there's more solid lifters on Miata forums than there are on Protege forums where they worship the old BP05.

So after all this, apparently a buddy had a set of solid lifter heads this whole time and he just wanted to trade me them for a set of MX3 sideskirts i had.

So, turns out i ended up with 2 sets of lifters and shims in addition to solid lifter heads which i should have just started with from the beginning.

Thinking maybe i should cut my losses on the Millenia heads i've been working on ($150) and drop the solid lifter heads off to the machine shop and just have them do the same work they were doing on the Milly heads, and just drop in some good springs and set the lash.
