I'm completely satisfied with my BEGI spacer + KIA waterneck + GM truck hose. But, I'm a 1.6 with a 5-speed and installed it with the engine pulled.

Given that you've got the "thin skin" issue and discuss things with your mechanic, I think M-tuned is the right answer for you. You'll more than make up the parts cost delta with saved labor expense.
