I would never, ever, open up a perfectly running engine unless I was refreshing or building it.

Run all of it , then you can do the head gasket ,rods and pistons etc. all at once.

This happened to me. Well, not quite, I had burned exhaust valves, so the head had to come off, and I had to buy new valves. And the oversize ones cost LESS than stock valves! And FM's machine shop charged LESS than the ones in California, so I sent it to them. And as long as it was there, well, I pretty much had to get it ported & polished & unshrouded etc etc, right?
