Default Review: Grand Turismo Prologue (PS3)

So I imported the newest version of the Grand Turismo series from Japan with high expectations. I had previously played the GT HD (downloadable demo) and was SUPER disappointed in that. And in summary the GTP version of the game is crap. Below are the major flaws:
  • No damage to cars!
  • No upgrade paths (like Forza)
  • Very limited courses (running it backwards does not make it a "new course")
  • Handling on cars is not commensurate to the actual car (FWD/AWD/RWD)

I got spoiled this weekend by playing at my friends house on PGR4 and Forza 2 I suppose. GTP has good graphics, but the game play is absolutely awful and the car selection is lacking. When it releases here in the states April 15th I certainly hope it fails.

That just mean Forza 2 is a much better game. I too played the hell out of gran turismo saga and #4 was ok until I played Forza2. Its so acurate as for damage, car feel, and adjustability. Too bad the guys at polyphony didn't read their customer reviews of #4 very well and should have made it more like Forza2 but with better graphics.

Thanks for the warning! I have been thinking about a PS3, but now I might spend my cash somewhere else.

+1 for Forza. Good stuff.

You do know Prologue is just a teaser right? It is no way the full game, it has always been a small example. I still don't know why people pay for it, it isn't worth it. I heard it was $30-40, with only 10% of the content of the game. Just what I heard.

I really liked GT4. I'm hoping GT5 steps up the AI mostly. I REALLY hate that 1st place car tearing off ahead while the other 4 just get in my way. Then when I pass the 1st car I never see him again.

Crash damage, meh. I play to race, not crash. It would be nice if bumping the car infront of you messed up your aero, but I try not to hit the other cars. I will still buy GT5 with or without it.

Yeah I don't give a **** about crash damage either. Forza sucks IMHO, it's too arcade-y.

crash damage would be a nice addition to GT. however, i avoid making any contact to add to the simulation aspect of the game.

The only thing I find in Forza that makes it Arcade-esque. Is in the early races they have little limitations on what can do to the car, allowing you to exploit the platform and trash the competition. This dramatically changes in later races, when you find you are incapable of keeping up with the front of the pack, and they are often cars you can't even afford.

I've certainly made some of the sickest cars no one has ever seen. The biggest limitation actually comes to how much you can do with Tires. You just can't put 12 inch wide rims and tires on a car that ends up really needing them because you are a sick bastard who put 800 hp in a 2,000 lb car.

Give me a little while to get back into the game and I'll take on challengers. I had my forza profile get deleted it made me sad =( but I still have my Time Trials records.

Of course you avoid, but wouldn't it be better if they actual penalized you for NOT avoiding? Granted when a race goes bad and you end up saying "aaah...**** it" it is always fun to wreck ****.

Wreckage is related to performance in forza, which makes sense. Another feature that is nice is the ability to step up your car. For example, if I wanted to buy an IS300, I can opt to do a Supra swap into it. I can adjust the gear ratios, brake ratio, etc.

why swap the motors?? sounds like they are trying to appease the ricer "my motor sux munkey shiz so les get another thats da Jaydim way!!1!" philosophy . If your car's motor sux then don't buy it, thats like buying the alfa-romeo's in GT4 and saying "this needs the motor from the oreca viper" And brakes/gear ratios were adjustable in gt3 so i still don't see the benefit of forza

But that was 2 GTs ago. The only adjust ability as of now is the tires and traction control.
