Default Escort GT TB fits 1.6

Not sure if this was ever confirmed before, but the TB from a 2nd gen Escort GT (1.8 DOHC) will fit the 1.6 Miata. It is the exact same part.

Also the Protege DX TB will fit, again it is the exact same part. Both of these should be easy to find for a variable TPS. I was able to find 4 in one junkyard today.

Sorry if this is already common knowledge, I didn't see it confirmed anywhere.

Nice find. I wonder how secure the screws are on the butterfly?

I know you said "exact same part", but might it be bigger?
Side-by-side shots please.

I don't think so, as far as I can tell it is the exact same thing. I did take mine off the manifold and push it down to test fit the GT one.

I will grab some quick pictures of the GT one to show you. Mine is still on the car, so no side by sides, but it is again the exact same thing.

I decided to pull mine out now, I need to wire it in eventually anyway right? I'll have pictures up soon.

Well, found a snag. The GT TB is missing a pathway. The Miata one is on the left, GT is on the right. Sorry for the crappy pictures, using my brothers crappy camera. I can take more if needed.

I'm not sure what that pathway is for. The TPS mounting side is different enough as to not allow the shaft and TPS to be trasnplanted. Does anyone know what it is for?

Overview. The only other difference is the coolant line going out instead of back.

I went and checked the manifold, there is simply a hose looping back into the manifold. I don't see any reason it's there, maybe an option I don't have? If it is needed it looks like it could simply be T'd into any post-TB vacuum line.

I have a tps from an automatic Escort Gt on my car right now, no problems, just bolted the whole assembly on and went on with my merry business.

So then that passage must be useless. Good to know. I guess I will go bolt it on then. Talk about an affordable VTPS, cost me $15.

you're comparing a manual tb to an auto tb and they're not the same

I know I am, I'm after the VTPS the auto has for my MS. So far the only difference I can find is that one passage, and as far as I can tell it doesn't do anything on my Miata anyway.

right- so it's not a snag
My point being that the escort/protege auto tb probably looks identical to the miata auto tb- inlcuding that passage. I'll have a miata auto tb next week.

Good info, auto Escort and Proteges are easier to find than Auto 1.6's.

From the picture it looks like you could Dremel that passage out in about 2 seconds unless there's something I'm missing. Does it look like a quick Dremel job or what?

I swear I would go there every day if I could. My Honda was built from there.

It would take a while to dremel out because it is pretty thick. On my car that passage does nothing. It simply runs to a hose which runs to the #1 runner on the manifold. Both ends are post TB and no sensors to be found. Maybe it is different on other cars?

I put on the GT TB and drove around, works just fine. It was PNP with the manifold, just needs the plug spliced in. Beats the hell out of tracking down an auto Miata or rigging up an aftermarket one.

I have had the GT TB on for 3 days and no problems. I guess I'll need to make a post over on m.net.
