Default Bipes Install

Funny, I thought it was bigger... just barely bigger than a deck of cards though. It was on the porch when I got home, install to commense right meow!
I'll be back in a couple hours to post how it went. I don't know how hard it can be based on these instructions and the fact that the seller included the harness he hooked up: http://www.frontiernet.net/~bipesauto/BipesACU/

But, a good DIY'er always posts his tale.

can use use a wirestripper, soildering iron and some electrical tape? if so then you are in business.

I also wrote on the install diagram which color I designiated each wire. That made it a lot easier to find/match wires.

Just about ready to start... had to make dinner. DAMN, life always interferes with hobbies... but had one question. I want to drive with it installed and fully hooked up for a couple of days, and want to place it on it's minimum settings. Is this right?

Switch positions should be:
1: OPEN=1.6
2/3/4: OPEN/OPEN/OPEN= 4*max retard (minimum setting)
5/6: OPEN/OPEN= 1* additional ret for every 50*F (minimum setting)
7/8: CLOSE/CLOSE= 3000start retard/4000 max retard (latest acion in RPM band, ie minimum setting)
9/10: My choice for display (advice requested)

Afirm, take the seat out. I'm ready to start cutting... it looks like on Brains photo that all the wires to splice into are on the larger of the two yellow harnesses. Is that correct?

Thanks U, that confirms what I found... but I work better in colors so here's what I found:

White: Big harness

Red: both harnesses, but on the big harness it's taped to another wire Red/Blue

Red/Grn: Big harness

Wht/Red: small harness

Blk/Grn: 3 wires, one skinny one on the small harness and 2 fat ones on the large harness.

WTF!!! Which ones do I use? Does it matter?

All right, wiring complete, now troubleshooting slight problem... standby...

I've searched and found nothing like this problem.
It started up first time and idles great.
When I step on the gas, it drops about 500rpm and then picks back up. As long as I'm gentle and feed in throttle slowly, it will rev fine, but as soon as I do anything with the gas pedal other than "move it very slowly," it, it tries to die.

I've verified my open closed positions are correct. I'm running:
1: OPEN=1.6
2/3/4: OPEN/OPEN/OPEN= 4*max retard (minimum setting)
5/6: OPEN/OPEN= 1* additional ret for every 50*F (minimum setting)
7/8: CLOSE/CLOSE= 3000start retard/4000 max retard (minimum setting)
9/10: Display: tried various.

When showing AIRFLOW, all lights are on at idle (indicating max airflow). Any throttle application and they all go out. (I know this is not supposed to happen.)

I only have one question on the wiring. The Airflow feed to the Bipes is supposed to be a red wire. But there are two red wires feeding into the ECU. One red wire is on the smaller of the two yellow harnesses (this is the one I'm spliced into). The other red wire is on the larger harness, but about three inches after coming out of the harness, it turns into a grey-ish wire(with blue stripe?) and is electrical taped to another multi-colored wire. Is it coincidence that my wiring question happens to coincide with my airflow dilemna?

I've paper clip'd the cas wires and unplugged the Bipes and the engine runs like normal with normal throttle response.

What's Up?

Go by the diagrams I posted, use the correlating PIN numbers, not the colors. Airflow is 2O, which is the R/W wire on the top of the larger harness. The R wire you tapped into on the smaller harness looks to be 1N which shouldn't have been tapped. Only one wire should be tapped on the small harness, 1B (W/R) your +12v source.

Well crap, that's enough to screw anybody up who has an Arts Degree. I work in colors. The diagram says the Airflow wire should be RED... but the PIN diagram shows pin 2O to be RED/WHT. THAT'S BS!
Oh well, I drove it to work on a paperclip... it'll be enough to get me home.

Thanks Brain!

I'm the same way, but yeah when I reviewed the harness compared to what the pin #s were they werent matching up. (I went to school for Art to begin with, ended up with an advertising major)

Yup, it was that one wire... which is Red afterall. Stupid diagrams
It fired right up first time and runs like normal now that the wires are right. I've tested it out using the various display modes and changing the Max-Retard and RPM ranges. Damn, pulling a full 14* of timing at 3400RPM feels like about 20hp disappeared. So anyways... it works.

In the 2nd picture, the solid red wire on the left that turns into the Grey/Red wire is the one to use for Airflow. Not a lot of splicing room there.
