It seems to me that there have been quite a few threads centering around detonation lately. A few people have popped motors in the last year or so due to knock, and in a few of those instances I've heard the phrase "but I didn't hear any knock" uttered. We all know that knock doesn't necessarily need to be readily audible to be destructive, and the best way to detect it while tuning is with det cans.

What I want to offer is a simple, plug-and-play set of electronic det cans. It would come with a mic and 5 feet of shielded cable, volume adjustable amp, power cord (plugs into cig lighter) and instructions. The audio will only be filtered enough to block RF interference. As hustler has pointed out a few times, your ears are a better filter than any circuit I could build .

I'd like to offer these for $50 shipped. This is of course a tentative price. Depending on the interest level, that could fluctuate a little bit due to volume pricing on components. If everyone thinks I'm full of **** and trying to rob them, I can try to pull the price down a bit as well.

Now that I've got the WI spraying this is a must have to get the most out of it.

I tell myself I'm going to build an acoustic set, but school is kicking my ***, and work over the break will be worse.

This would be a lifesaver as I plan on getting ready for a dyno day.

Well, more interest than I expected . Seems like enough people would want these that I can start ordering materials without having to worry about them not selling. I can probably be in the full swing of things by the 1st week of January. I'm going to be leaving to visit family here soon, plus I want to do some more testing before I start sending these out. Maybe even shipping by then, but we'll see.

I'll post a formal for sale thread once I get things figured out. I don't want to accept pre-payments because I'm not trying to run into the same thing Travis did with the COP group buy. I'd rather sell them off the shelf.


I can definately look in to this. The prototype just sits in my glovebox with the output coming out and plugging into my CD player.

A clip perhaps? Maybe Velcro? It looks like I can get a good deal on the stick on ones that adjust to grip your phone. Depending on how things go, I might be able to throw these in.

With that said, any features you guys think are necessary? Within reason of course, Its not going to automatically tune your car. Thats what the LC-1 is for

I'm in, but I would like an audio clip that proves it works. I have all the materials to build my det cans, but I'd definitely pay for a pre-made setup like this. I request a normal size head phone jack. Hopefully a nice pair of ear buds will eliminate the need for the giant earmuffs. It's hard enough fighting off *** status as it is.

Put me down for the first round and I will paypal you when they are ready. The timing will be great since my new engine is going in around the same time.

Mounting point on the engine will be user chosen. I'm thinking about offering two different mic attachment options. The first would be a simple alligator clip. You could clip it to the valve cover/motor mount/block and be good to go. This is how I currently have the prototype. It takes all of 15 seconds to clip it down, run the cable in through the door, and plug it in. The second option would be to attach the mic to an 'L' bracket to be bolted down. You could get a more ideal location at the center of the block, but it would take a bit longer to install.

I just need a 3.5mm output and I'm in business.

On mounting points:

Generally we'd want the stock location, but I've seen folks go towards cyl #4. Considering most of us have done reroutes this is no longer needed.

I was going to put mine on the front end since cyl #1 supposedly gets less of the water injection charge.


EDIT:
I'd prefer an L bracket, but I was considering this with an acoustic pickup that could be left there permanently. Will it damage the mic to leave it there on a daily driver?

I was waiting for someone to ask for a clip to prove it works. I'll be helping to tune sbkcocker499's motor this sunday, and I'd be happy to post up audio samples. I'm also willing to hook it up to mine and try to induce some knock for comparison. I'm a stand up kind of guy, I wouldn't just try to just huck **** at you guys .

Edit: I'm also going to put together an audio sample with a piezo disk as well as the regular mic. I tried a standard issue piezo and found it to be almost too sensitive. While I was testing the circuit I accidentally dropped it on my desk. I thought my brain was going to explode :P.
