Another thought. Make it so that newbs can only make ONE post per 24 hours, up to 20-25 posts. Remind them when they sign up in BIG PRINT that they only get one post per day, so make it count. It would cut down on clutter, eliminate spamming just to get to the post limit for the for sale ads and ultimately chase off the "pop in for instant gratification" posters. Anyone willing to pop in 25 times in 25 days is bound to do some searching and is serious.
I hate that the bad ones always wreck it for the good ones.

We aren't shunning newbs. We are shunning annoying newbs who don't search and read. The former become active, participating members (and usually subscribe); we don't want the latter on this forum.

I subscribed just for the sticker. That and the fact that this is a motivated, knowledgable forum with people that have had just about every idea I will ever have. The only thing that is missing is an engine conversions section. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with Turbo miatas, but the conversion section is the only reason I go to the 'other' forum. I see the topic come up in here every once in a while, but I see no reason why the education and experience of this body of people can't get involved in some of the exciting developments in v8 transplants.

I have been a member of this forum for about 2 years this coming 22nd! (wow, I checked that and I was blown away!). I had been a member of the "other" forum for 6 months prior to that date. BTW, I was never able to get any straight answer from that "other" board.
I'm still here for several reasons:
1) I'm amazed by the fact that my car is turboed and running without major issues. I think it has already been more than 1 year since I first turboed my car.
2) Many times I come back to the forum just to relax and shoot the breeze and let guys who could be my sons mess with me in good fun.
3) I don't have to be told not to participate in some threads where some of the Miata gurus discuss things I can't even begin to comprehend. So, normally I will read a thread like that and simply not post anything. A current example: Pat, began a thread about Manifolds and another one about WI; I got no clue, so I read and shut up.
4) Some of you bitch and moan but you are then the same ones who help dumbasses like me to solve problems we encounter along the way.
5) I enjoy trying to assist some new guys who are as clueless as I am (sometimes even more, lol).
6) I've made some transactions with forum members and I can honestly say I've made a few friends here. Some I have even invited to my home anytime they wish.
7) Finally, I like Rick's business model for this board.

You've accurately put into words the thought that I was having trouble figuring out how to express.
Further fragmentation is not the answer. Look at m.net, for instance. They have a total of 57 forums that are accessible to the general public, and there's just no way to keep up on all of them. Even here, we've grown to a point where there are certain forums that I hardly ever venture into unless someone PMs me with a problem.
Likewise, hiding the "good stuff" from the newbs is exactly the wrong way to help the ones that actually want to learn do so. They'll just show up, find a site that appears to be devoid of content, and leave.
And that's exactly what I fear.
Noobs are not all bad. There are some who are reasonably intelligent, have something to contribute, and do well. There are some who are inexperienced and ask a lot of stupid questions, but genuinely want to learn. (Hell, that was me once.) But then there are some, and I genuinely believe them to constitute a minority, who have no interest other than to stir up ****, who are closed minded and argumentative, or who are just plain retarded. I believe that this class is best handled on a one-by-one basis. I'm sorry that the rest of you have to listen to their rantings from time to time, but I'm not willing to punish every noob on account of the idiocy of a few. If we do, then we will become a stagnant members-only club, and eventually fade away through attrition.
Everyone, when you see something retarded going on, you have a choice. If you are able to compose a response which is witty, insightful, and conveys to the troublemaker in question the error of their ways, then feel free to do so. Please me mindful of thread clutter, and if two or three other people have already jumped on the newb, a fourth is probably not necessary. If you are unable or unwilling to do so, or if it isn't working and it seems that the mods are nowhere to be found, use the little Report button (
) to let us know that there's a problem, and it will be dealt with. I'm genuinely shocked by how infrequently I receive post reports, relative to the amount of complaining going on right now. If it's a thread where the mods have already jumped in and are clearly having fun at the newb's expense, well, tough. As an example of this, I cite HyperPan's recent escapades. Clearly he is a retard, however his thread has turned into something that I find quite amusing. I have limited him to just the one thread, and deleted the few other non-productive posts that he's made in other areas. If you don't want to waste your time reading his bullshit, stay out of the Coolant Reroute thread.

When the more senior members take it upon themselves to show noobs their place, y'all actually do a pretty reasonable and decent job. (Well, except Hustler.
) There are some folks who really do need to be shouted at in 72 point bold red capitol letters in order to figure out where their own ******* is. The danger is that we risk setting an example, saying that this sort of behavior is acceptable generally. That's when other folks, who don't know where the limits are or how to berate someone in a constructive fashion, start jumping on the bandwagon and doing it too. In the end, I think it's probably best that those of you who are capable of posting such replies in a mature and reasonable fashion continue to do so, and we (the mods and admins) will simply have to let the others know that we don't condone random and unwarranted flaming, using force where necessary to make the point.
Someone mentioned the problem of subscribers. This has always been a delicate point for me, and I hope the other mods will forgive me for airing this sentiment in public. I don't enjoy banning subscribers. Rick, I know that this forum is a financial undertaking for you, and I don't like doing things that compromise your ability to fund the board, and potentially creating legal hassles for you.
Fortunately, it's been my experience that most of the problem users we encounter never bother to become subscribers. Why should they care if they're only here to stir up ****. On the couple of occasions where this conflict has arisen, I've resolved it through private communication with the member in question, and that has so far been successful. I will yield the banstick against a subscriber if it becomes absolutely necessary, but at this point it hasn't yet been.
I think we may all be somewhat jaded by memories of the past, and blind to how well we really do have it here compared to a lot of other forums. MT is still a place where you can say or do damn near anything that isn't either outright spam or just plain retarded (or **** without a NWS tag). I don't plan on changing that anytime soon. Maybe we do need to step up a bit on enforcement of the "No Retards" policy, and if anything I'm probably guiltier than anyone of letting that slide of late, largely because I do tend to by sympathetic to people who show even the faintest hope of learning something. That, and sometimes it's fun to watch the retards struggle.
To those folks (SamNavy and others) who have long been our Newb Enforcement Squad, please don't think your efforts are unappreciated. You know who you are, you know how to handle things, and you know how ****'s supposed to work around here. And I thank you.

ah what the hell, I will admit it: I have lately been a little harsh on some noobs, particularly this rotary guy that is just irritating me with his unrealistic fantasies of 700+whp rotary engine, 10.5" wheels, trunk mounted intercooler with nitrous purge, etc....For that I apologize, and will let more experienced guys like sam deal with them
I do very strongly agree with the idea of limited privileges for noobs. While I'm still technically a noob, when I joined I must say I was eraped in here after a couple stupid questions (thank god I never started new threads for them LOL) and while at first I thought you guys were are a bunch of ******* ********, in about a month this turned into a forum I visit almost on a daily basis. Once I realized "suck it up and search" my stay here is that much more pleasant.

Yeah, I got tired of the 185/60 street tires I had. My roommate bought Belacyrf's car and those are his old wheels. Traded him my 15x8 6ULs+cash for them. Still have the 15x9s for track use.
