Rather than restrict a NOOB why not add a banner of some type that directs those NOOB to turbocharging to the basic information they are seeking?

As far as post counts are concerned, I would be/am a NOOB here to these forums, but in reality I am NOT a NOOB to turbocharging. In fact, I have been around turbocharging for a good 30 years or more, many here were not born by then, and many were still in diapers when I turbocharged my first car. Should I consider them to be too stupid or restrict them due to their age? I would never think that way, but I am sure there is a point here that strikes a chord about how we should embrace someone new and help them not make them feel inferior.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, regardless of your skill levels there is always something to be learned all throughout your life. If someone asks what you believe to be a stupid question there are probably many who might have asked the same question but were afraid to ask because of the flames associated. Why not take a more adult-like approach and refer them to the information they seek? Or, would that be asking too much?

A few days ago I spent a ton of time trying to research some information about a cooling system problem, I did not find something specific to the problem, so finally I asked what many with cooling system experience would consider a dumb question. Someone was gracious enough to confirm what I already suspicioned was the problem and also what I was thinking about doing as a hopeful fix. Sometimes questions, stupid as they may seem, are only to confirm something you might be considering doing as intervention to your problem, but your uncertainty due to inexperience with your problem needs someone to tell you that you are on the right track.

If someone proves themselves to be eternally stupid, then there are other ways to direct them without making them feel inferior or suggesting they are stupid. Not everyone has gifts of specific types of intelligence, some DO have to struggle, give them credit for attempting the struggle and guide/direct them.

restrictions are worthless. they'll just spam their 50 posts there and it'll be the same only instead of saying "hello i am dumb and have 3 posts" it'll be "hello I am dumb and have 53 posts".

Agreed that restrictions, warnings, banners, etc. won't help. It's a case of either you've tried to do at least some homework (I apparently learned more about the car before I bought it than some people ever do) or you jump in expecting other people to do the work for you.

Restrictions will only make it more difficult for those with something to contribute (and more work for the mods) and for any legitimate questions that arise. Continue to bash those asking dumb questions (not always the newbs, either) and ban the jerks.

How about just trial by fire. Noobs post in the noob section, people come in and vote if that person is a noob or not and they get let out. Simple.

Noobs can post anywhere, but only open new threads in the noob section.

Mods move non-noobish questions into the appropriate non-noob sections of the forum.

I nominate Samnavy and Hustler to be the noob forum mods.
