Sometimes it does that.
I've found that if say they're in queensdale, you can teleport to divinitys reach then use the porthole to go back into queensdale, you'll end up with them sometimes. If that doesn't work, then you can try to join in again.
I've never found a way not to play with people, it's a shitty system to work around though i agree.
I'm glad the wiki is back up, that's helpful.

Bought this last night, played to lvl 7, had fun. Worth it so far, neat graphics and cool **** to explore. Cool combat system. Lots of confusing **** to me that keeps me entertained.. for now.
I'll update after playing a bit more.

Why you *** no join blackgate like I posted up? ******* noobs.
I have played a eng to 15, war to 7, ranger to 4, and thief to 4. Like the game over all but have not found a profession I like and pissed that if I take weapon and armor smith they both have the same smelting skills but only the crafting skill I have open gets exp for it.

Sorry i ended up joining some old gaming buddies on a diff server.
I got to lvl 7 with my mesmer. So far its pretty damn neat, although I'm starting to wonder if i should have rolled a melee class.
Oh well ill probably stick with what ive got now. I dont feel like playing every class to decide, i don't have time for that ****!

I was told to join Gate of Madness since some old guildies from wow were joining it. Still waiting for the full release tomorrow though before they show up. So far I have a lvl 11 warrior and a lvl 9 ele.
As far as the melee vs ranged, i have the feeling this game is favoring ranged a lot more. The dodging system favors ranged very much. So yes i'm rocking a warrior with a shot gun primary and a double sword 2nd set.
Fireindc, switch weapons around see what you like better. (Different moves/attacks)

I'm finding the story kind of short, BUT i love the fact that i can join / play with my guild / party mates in their story. Which is nice because the storyline is different per how you set your guy up.
Try working on daily / weekly tasks and clear an entire area 100%. You get really good xp and loot. I'm loving all of the puzzles. Just not the jumping puzzles so much to get to vistas and what not, it's not easy when you've been drinking.

Yeah i just picked up a staff and was liking it better actually. I like how confusing the mesmer must be to fight in pvp (ive yet to try), but i know that there can be 4 of me at once and it confused me at first, LOL.

Holy **** my warrior is a monster.
Primary weapon great sword
Secondary axe with shield.
Initial attack
weapon toss (4), then a charge of some kind (5) or (3).
Then (2). Then switch weapons and if you're fill to 3 use F1, if not use the axe spin then use F1. I can usually finish off most elites in few seconds
Currently i have 1700 ish hp. With this i do about 2500 dmg in this combo that lasts about 5-7 seconds.

I tried pvping with my mesmer, it was.. interesting. I can tell this is not the type of class that will be easy to pvp with, but it looks like it will pay off if you develop some skills. I didn't like being thrown into level 80 with random weapons and moves I have yet to learn or play with. Because of this alone I did pretty badly, however once I started to get the hang of it I did better. Only played a match or so, I need more time with my character to pvp.
Mesmer is not a button mashing class. It's not THAT hard, but maybe comparable to a warlock in wow or something. Just a ton of things to think about at once when in a fight.
So far, the game is totally decent. I'm not going to go out and say its OMGAMAZING, but so far I feel its more than worth the entry price (considering no mo. fee).
