Doom 3 BFG removed from Oculus Rift launch package, Team Fortress 2 adds support instead - Neoseeker

Interesting.

The seventh seal is finally broken!

And it's unquestionably the Ultimate Hat.

So it turns out that there are some really interesting servers out there. I'm just gonna let the pictures speak for themselves:

Yes, the Ponies are playable characters.

Is the big guy in the first picture wearing a barrister's powdered wig?

Yes. It's called the Pounding Father, a promotional hat awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-purchased BioShock Infinite before March 26th, 2013. It is a reference to a character in BioShock called the Motorized Patriot, which is a robot crafted in the likeness of George Washington.

So, did anybody notice the Really Unusual Thing about that last image I posted?

It is indeed.

And the really scary part is that I'm actually starting to like it.

Yes, yes- I know everyone's going to accuse me of turning into a brony. But let me make two specific points:

First, this server seems to be very well-moderated, and populated mostly by bronies who take the whole "love & tolerate" thing pretty seriously. As a result of this, it's mostly devoid of all the bullshit that you find on most other public servers (children, whiners, mic-spammers, spawn-camping, etc.)

Second, it turns out that the pony characters add a really interesting new dynamic to the game.

The way it works is that at the beginning of every round, one player on each team is randomly transformed into a pony (generically called a hero.) But it's not merely a cosmetic upgrade- it radically changes the character. In addition to a massive pool of health, the character also gains a special ability which is somehow peripherally related to their personality on the show. (I'm starting to learn waaay too much about this stuff.) So one of them can stun every player on the other team with whining, one of them can make it rain fire, one can deploy a temporary mass-overheal to all their teammates, one can give their whole team crits, etc. These can only be used after the player's ability meter (laughter, generosity, whatever) is full, so timing is crucial. This can make or break a coordinated rush against a well-defended control point.

In return, the pony characters are mostly limited to melee attacks, which forces them to engage the enemy up-close. So there are no sniper ponies or minigun-wielding ponies, for instance. A few of them do have specific tools and abilities which make them unique- Fluttershy (the yellow/pink one) has a super-Medigun, and Trixie (light blue with wizard hat and cape) has a standard flamethrower. Rainbow Dash (blue with rainbow tail) can actually fly, and Applejack (orange with cowboy hat) can construct Engineer buildings and self-generate metal.

I know it sounds gay (and this coming from the Mod of a kitten & Miata forum) but it's really quite a hoot.

And apparently they are continuing to put some serious development effort into the characters and game code. From what I gather, there was a major revision over the weekend with all new character models and a couple of new characters in beta. I gotta hand it to 'em, these folks are putting some serious dedication into this:

Ok, so in all seriousness: how can you not find it hilariously amusing to take these adorable, candy-colored ponies from their world of friendship & harmony, and drop then into the middle of a battlefield where they get to use magic and rainbows and laughter against a bunch of soldiers and demos and heavies and engineers?

This tickles the same nerve as ironic cat pictures.

Yes, yes you do.

Might I suggest the Radeon 7770? It's quite inexpensive, runs quiet and cool, has very low power consumption, and does a perfectly adequate job of rendering Princess Luna in all of her sparkly purple majesty at 1920x1200 & >150 FPS.

What are the specs on the old PC?
