torsens came with some options and not others. you can figure it out that way sometimes, sometimes not. Like C with leather and R packages. I'm not sure about B packages, but not A.

When I was shopping for my car, I knew I was going turbo, so I didn't even consider anything that wasn't a black '94 with a Torsen.
Sigh! So true, so true! If only I could have seen this quote 9 years ago! Would have saved me from buying 1.8 rotors, 1.8 pads, 1.8 caliper mounts, 1.8 diff driveshaft & axles, 1.8 flywheel and 1.8 size clutch.

Thanks guys, even with all the info on the diffs, its still pretty confusing which cars would have which. Is it in an easy enough position to identify when checking out the car when the car is on the ground?

And take a good long look through the m.net Garage and FAQ and to get a good idea of the information there for all future general questions about Miatas:

This is how to spot a Torsen:

Torsen stands for Torque-Sensing... read here why you want one:

Ok, since we are on the subject:
a co-worker of mine has a 86 rx7 non-turbo that I can get parts off of. Ive heard from some that some have the clutch type, and some have the type-2. The type2 supposedly needs lots of work to get to work in a miata, while the clutch type pumpkin supposedly drops right into the miata carrier. Can you shed some light on this for me? or maybe show me some links. Sorry if this is too much off topic.

Pretty easy. On a '94, any car with a package (A, B, C, R, or M) has a Torsen. Only base cars or auto cars came with open diffs. Look at the Miata.net garage to figure out which options came on the A package cars; if a car has X options, then it will have a torsen. To confirm, call Mazda USA with a VIN number and they will tell you whether the car shipped with a Torsen.

And even if you end up buying an open diff car, swapping an Rx7 LSD into it is about $400-500. The Rx7 diffs are stronger for drag launches.

Thanks Savington, that clears it up quite a bit.

Moon trip is like 250,000 miles isn't it?
