Default 1.8 Escort GT engine -> 1.8 Swap

The engine in my 94 has about 175k miles on it, and I'm looking to score a low mileage 1.8 Escort GT engine to swap in it's place. I've read the article on m.net about the Escort swap into a 1.6, but not much has been said about the swap into a 1.8.

Does anybody have experience with it? Will it basically be a direct swap? The only things I know I will have to add are the coil pack and oil pan, but those will come off my current 1.8. Maybe the valve cover too.

So, any experience / tips?

to my knowledge, the block and head are the same, just transfer all the accesories...
any escort with BP or Mazda Protege with BP...its not a simple PnP swap, you have to transfer all your **** pretty much, but if you score one pretty cheap it is definitively worth it...

On a side note, I'd like to see what the rear waterneck looks like.

I swapped an Escort GT 1.8 into my 97 Miata. I haven't read the m.net article, so might be repeating stuff......

The coolant routing for the heater and rad are different. I left the frost plug at the front and did a coolant reroute. I also used some copper pipe to route one of the heater lines (basically made a U pipe to turn it 180 degrees) to use the stock Miata rubber heater hoses. I did have to mess around with the coolant return to the rad. The 1.8 Miata neck didn't fit, and I used something else. Might have been a 1.6 Miata neck or something KIA, I don't remember (I also don't remember going to a KIA dealer so probably the 1.6 Miata part)

Swapped in the Miata oil pan and also used the Miata valve cover although the Escort valve cover will work.

As far as I remember, all the accessories and my turbo bits just bolted up.

The only pic that I have is of the finished job, taken between when the stock crossover pipe exploded and when the intercooler went in. I didn't take any pics of the install process, sorry.

sweet. and yeah, if Miata 1.8's were cheap and readily available, I would be all over that. I just think spending $150 on a low mileage 1.8 is a better investment that whatever else is available to me =]
