Anyone know on this??
the shop manual says "push it into place" then drive it with a socket.
But when I push it into place it appears that if I insert the seal with the
flat side in first it goes in no problem. But when inserting it with the spring side first and the flat part facing me ( toward the radiator), it doesnt want to go in at all.
Any ideas??

the flat part should be towards you. Didn't you look at the old one before you pulled it? Also it takes a big socket to drive it in straigth and flush be carefull and do it right and square, or it will leak i used a 1 1/2 inch pcv coupler and the crank bolt on mine i believe to drive it in square. GL.

Okay thats what I figured.
The shop manual says to push it in by hand and then set. The "pushing" in by hand, just didnt work for me and it started me thinking.
BTW it had been over two weeks waiting for everything from Roebuck Mazda. - woodruff key, crank etc. and I simply forgot which direction it went in.
Lesson learned....take pics.

psst this might help as well 
enjoy also dont forget the oilpump gasket if you took the oe one off. cardomain seems to be down at the moment but i believe this guy has a write up on it. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2331510 GL

Ya ill repeat what magna said just now, if you took the oilpan/oilpump/or rear crank seal housing, use new gaskets because they require pulling the engine again to redo.

This REALLY needs to be a sticky or permision from the user to repost it and stickify it.
Truth be told, I searched google, AND their image section and came up with nothing.
The link you posted is invaluable, in that it provides the clearest example thus far of install.
YES..its better than miata.net.'s and not very clear even in the shop manual which I own.
