Default 1993 Miata Le

Hi,
I have a 1993 miata le...Its in good condition and has around 130k miles.
I wanted to know if its okay to get turbo for it... as people told me that at 130k miles, turbo can create many problems for engine and other parts...
also if you guyz say its okay to get turbo.. then which kit? and is there a good place to get it installed in or around VIRGINIA?

thanks

we got quite a few people around virginia, 130k is fine for turbocharging unless the oil changes have been sadly neglected and the things burning tons of oil or something else. Its not so much the mileage as having a well maintained car. I would suggest if it hasnt recently been done to do a new timing belt, waterpump, full fluid change etc. Also a few pre turbo upgrades I would really recommend are an upgraded clutch, better brake pads, and 7 - 8" wide wheels with some sticky street rubber. Being able to stop quickly could be a life saving feature in a fast car like a turbo miata. Also if you know you want to run like 12 - 15psi down the road getting some sort of engine management that can tune both fuel and ignition ... most people on here would tell you to go Megasquirt PNP, and I agree because its a fine choice. There are others though like Hydra, AEM, Link, EMU that can all do just fine set up correctly.

I didn't turbo mine until about 164k miles. Excellent choice for a base car to turbo though with the 93LE!

Latitude, please take a couple minutes to read the "ANNOUNCEMENT" at the top of every forum... the second post in there is very important for you.

Then go to the DIY section, and read the Sticky Titled "TURBO FAQ". Both of these posts should get you started.

Be sure to fill out your profile with exactly where you live in Virginia so locals can offer to help.

Thanks a lot for all of your replies.

I was not able to reply for a little while but now i am back have the money and the time to get my car turbocharged! yay!.

Well yeah i have changed oil after every 3k miles. It has new tires... new break pads n clutch aswell. I dont know much about cars.. my brother does all the work.. this will be kind of a project for us.. we plan on doing it our selvs...

Is that a good idea?.. how much will it cost for me to get it done professinaly? in northern virginia? I live in gainesville.. its near manassas/centreville.

I am thinking about 5-6 psi boost so that i dont have to upgrade any internals..

https://www.miataturbo.net/prefabbed-turbo-kits-3/video-acceleration-run-5psi-12259/
now thats freakin sweet...

http://shop.edoperformance.com/gredd...93-p-3871.html
they are selling the kit for $1184... is that a good price?

where do you think i should buy the kit from? GReadyy looks nice i dont want to go for the cheap ebay kit.
Also how much do you think it will all cost? just a rough estimate.. a turbo kit..profesinall instalation...tuning... and any other part tht i hve to upgrade from a stock car to a turbocharged car..

Thanks again for the replies.. Really appreciate it!

I've personally installed a GReddy kit in 2 hours flat with hand tools and two helper mice, no need for a shop, they'll charge you 5 hours for it around here :gay:

Is it reliable to put turbo on a miata? Like will the miata's 1.8L engine be able to handle the turbo w/o having much problems assuming the turbo is put on by professionals with tuning? Cuz i heard this guy said mazda engine have problems, and once it does it gets fucked up, so putting turbo on will just make the problem worst?? Well i dont really know so give me some insights those of you that drive turbo miata, you guys encounter any mechanical problems with your car after putting turbo on?

latitude-what you need to do is first decide how much power you want (be reasonable) and then get the right stuff to get there
other way around, go with something very common, such as a greddy kit and do the common upgrades, not a whole lot of power, but your in a miata, 200hp feels way faster than anything alse with 200hp
gl and make friends with locals, thats your best bet

Yeah thats exactly what i have in mind.. I dont want it to be 250 hp or w/e..
the max i want to go is 180-200hp... and by year or so when i have more money i can upgrade the parts and go with a little more boost...
but my question is if i get the greddy kit (from the link i posted earlier).. what upgrades should i get done to my completly stock miata?...
how much would they cost?(aprox)... and where should i get the car tuned at?...

Braineack i went through the forums.. read a couple of posts.. read the FAQ but couldnt really see anything(for my situation)...

oh okay just re-read this
https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo-discussion-14/diy-faq-all-your-answers-one-big-post-4288/
tht helps with a lot of things..

anyone knows what is the price range for
GReaddyy turbo+tuning+part upgrads?

braieneack is the guy to listen to
you can probably have a good reliable set up for +-$2000 if you buy of the shelf parts and dont do any fabricating yourslef...keep an eye out on the classifieds, you can buy lots of stuff there and save lots of money...before you turbo, you should know everything affiliated, thats why you have to decide what set-up you want to run and then decide accordingly where you gona get your parts...i preferre megasquirt and bigger injectors for engine management but its not exactly simple, so you may want to go with band-aids, just as moch money but easier to tune...but i say study hard and go with megasquirt, you'll be glad you did later

I didn't read beyond the first two sentences of hte first post.

I turbo'ed mine at 151k miles and it runs fine. I have some oil burning, but nothing catastrophic. Passed smog just fine (People's Republic of California) and I'm currently rebuilding an engine to change out.

the best thing to do is become friends with me and then use me for my incredible handiness. hopefully my case of murphy's law finally rubs off on someone else.

like for example, i helped, on this site alone, install: newbsauce x2, rappadan, & sheiend's turbo kits.

another smart idea would be to tag along to the dyno day (see NE dyno day post) and get familar with some of us here and get a sample of lots of different kits.

I can say without a doubt, dont let me near your car once it is boosted if you want it to still work. Latitude I would definately suggest going to the NE DYNO day just to get to knwo some of us local people.

As for costs, the base greddy kit is $1200. MSPNP $700. LC-1 $200, Intercooler $500, Injectors $100. So for about 2.5grand you can have a good setup to boost to abotu 200hp.

Yeah deffintly i would try to come along.. that seems to be a nice idea..
I replied to that thread as well..
ahh my car would be the slowest car there...oh well ill get to know all of you so it would be good..

and thanks dude! this is what i was looking for .. so roughly 2.5 grands...

oh and please let me know if you see a good deal anywhere on any of the parts
greddy kit , MSPNP , LC-1, Intercooler , Injectors.

Check the classifieds on here right now for I believe 2 greddy setups. If you can find the kit used you can save a good amount of money. As for the MSPNP and LC-1 you will msot likely have to buy those new from DIYAUTOTUNE.com. Injectors check out Braineacks list and go find some used ones off their and get them cleaned. That 2.5grand is for a good greddy setup. You can make that much power cheaper but you will be using bandaids and cutting corners. It all comes down to how much you want to spend.
