Default 2008 M3 ran down by my Miata

So I am taking a buddy for a ride in my 2002. I just recently installed a 3071R in. As we are leaving post there is a M3 in the turn lane. As we leave it gets stuck behind some traffic and I get an open lane. I can see it behind me trying to catch up. Finally he is beside us and I let the blow off valve say high. There is an exit coming up and he gets on it and I follow. The exit opens up to a 4 lane 80 mph highway with little traffic. I am in 3rd at 4000 ohh he picked a bad speed. Out of the exit he hits it and I am right with him he dosen't gain a bit until I'm half way through 5th. I guess my top being down has a bit of drag. LOL The AFCO's felt sooo nice at that speed no bobbling or funny business just solid. We exited togther and he immediately tried to make a right before I pulled up beside him. I gave him the baby Miata beep-beep and waved like it was a Sunday drive.

My buddy had the biggest smile and he was saying "No ******* Way.. you just hung with a M3!" "I wish I had my video camera for that"

Truthfully it was all I had to stay with him but I know he was doing the same.

I wonder what the conversation was when he got to work.

Driver "Hey man there was this little red convertible that was walking all over the *** of my M3"

Buddy helping him serch pictures on the internet. "Is this it?"

Driver "Yea that is it!"

Buddy "Its a ******* Miata! You got walked by a Miata?!?"

Driver "**** you"

Buddy "Muahahaaahaahahaaaa!!!!!!"

In what deluded world is "he pulled me in 5th gear" the same as "i ran him down"?

I've run down the prior gen M3s before and can walk them no problemo. It's good to know that after moar boost+++built engine I'll be able to shame them.

**** the naysayers. You hung with a car that a 30K mile service paid for your turbo setup. Good run man.

Nice run. When are you going to throw that thing on a dyno to see what it's putting down?

Haha nice. There's definitely a lot more power to be had though. A GT30 miata should be putting buses on an M3, moar boost!

you need a 3.0 to 1 diff ring & pinion ratio lol. I wish mine was lower than 4.1...

That M3 has over 400 hp. That's pretty impressive, regardless of what others may think your car should be capable of!

Unless he was topping 5th gear out when the BMW began to pull away, no he doesn't need taller gears. In fact, the top of the rpm range should be his most powerful area. The BMW pulled away IMO because of A.) more power - the higher the speeds, the more raw power is needed to increase speed and vehicle weight matters less and less, so the lower powered miata's better power to weight ratio matters less and less when the speed gets high enough and B.) aerodynamics - the miata is aerodynamically challenged. The BMW, while having a bulky silhouette, has a ton of aerodynamic developments that miatas do not. This matter more and more the higher the speed.

BTW. BMW Drive train loss is huge. They are rated at 414 bps and estimating a 25% power loss from drive train, they are only producing 310 WHP at roughly 3400 lbs. A turbo miata that is maybe 250 whp at 2200 lbs is faster PW ratio wise already. Then little stuff like aero dynamics and gearing is not that huge of an issue, so it is easily possible to beat a e90 or e92 M3.

BTW my miata is faster then my E46 M3 by far.

Good to know....I was side by side with one today for about a 1/2 mile on the highway but he didn't wanna play. I did'nt wanna do a ricer fly by so I just sat there side by side, and nuthin. Afterwards I pulled ahead and he slowed things WAY up because in a blink of an eye I could barely see him in my rearview. Not sure if he heard my bov, saw the Miataturbo.net stickers, or was just nervous about losing with his lady friend in the car...I was ready to give it a whirl even though I had my girlfriend, dog, and about 30lbs of "picnic" **** n tools in the trunk....My gf asked if I thought I would win and I said naw...but if I lost it would'nt be by much and you could buy like 5 miatas for the price of the M. Despite this, I love those cars, ******* sexy!

Hmm I "raced" another m3 today. Again, it was a last generation one. Just from a stoplight to about 85. I've turned my boost down to about 8psi and now I could barely crawl away towards 'em. He was in front and I saw a little puff of soot when he hit high RPMs. It's about 90 here today-- was his car just running rich from ECU trim due to the temperature? His car sounded factory so I don't think a straight pipe was involved.
