Default 6-speed/3.63 speedo gear fail *Now with more win than ever!!!*

so I tried to swap speedo gears today so the grossly inaccurate speedo read correctly. At 110mph, it reads 82mph.

I bought m503-17-441 as instructed on M.net, but the little plastic gear is smaller than the one that came out of the 6-speed. I should also note that the blue gear provided from Mazdaspeed is too small too.

the gear on the left game out of the car, the one on the right came from Mazda with the part # listed above. What did I do wrong?

Can the rubber seal in the housing not leak, yet still be deep enough to get the position right?

I searched for this a while ago after picking up the 3.6 gears. Not sure if I trust it, but here are some part #s.

MX-5 Miata Forum - View Single Post - Gear Ratios

edit: Searching for ---- shows some pages where other people identify it for 3.6 gears.

edit edit: I doubt this is the right one.

I used an M502-17-441 gear as I read that the M503 is good for larger wheels, such as 17". But it probably doesn't make a huge difference overall.

This is what I used to build the gear setup:

1011-17-442A - This is the sleeve/housing that will position the gear in the proper location to engage the gear within the transmission. If the sleeve that comes in a 5-speed transmission is used, the smaller 6-speed gear will be free-floating and will not engage. Thus, no readings.
M502-17-441 - This is the actual gear.
9922-20-214 - Spring Pin for holding the gear in the sleeve.
9958-60-8166 - Oil Seal for inside the sleeve.
1011-17-443 - O-Ring for the outside of the sleeve.

Hustler, I think the 1st part number listed will get you what you need to finish the project. I recommend at least getting the spring pin as well because knocking the old one out is a royal pain.

Simple solution is to be a man and sell your 3.636s for a real gear ratio (3.909).

Just for you Trey I just now pulled the speedo gear from my 6-speed that I use with a 3.636 R&P. According to a GPS at steady state cruise the speedo is within 1-2 MPH @ 80 mph with 205/50/15 tires. If I can still see clearly through the Hornitos goggles it is a 20 tooth gear. Pictures here...

In payment for my awesomeness you will send three members of your harem, the female harem, immediately to the Starbucks at 1604 and 281, where one of my slaves will pick them up and bring them to me for the rest of the weekend. Females are subject to approval of course, send pictures within the next hour. You will probably not want them back when I am done due to my relative awesomeness; they will be incurably spoiled.

+1 on the above about swapping gears. The sending unit offset has to be right too or that **** will not mesh properly, quite unlike my ***** will be meshing with the backdoors of your ill-fated three.

I just counted the teeth on the white gear in your picture; I count 19, Hornitos notwithstanding.

The housings and gears are matched pairs by application. This is a hustler fail because I built at least a dozen of these and have shared the part requirements more than once.

I worked with the guy at Miataroadster for months trying different combos of housing and gears, none of them worked. I'd be curious to see what your combo is and have you personally seen it work?

Yes, built and tested on my car. Running on plenty of other cars--I ran a group buy when I was at mazmart, sold lots of them. I also provided Rotornut with his.

I did some gear engineering back in the day. You can think of a set of meshing gears as two wheels rolling on each other. If the center-to-center distance between the two gear axes is too close they will jam and/or break something, and if too far apart they will not mesh correctly, or at all.

Holy crap you had to list your gear engineering history to say that gear mesh is important?
