Installing the COPs that I've had for a while. Ended up making my own bracket and spacers, because the COPs that I bought were longer than the recommended ones. Anyway, I have a couple of questions that don't seem to be addressed in the sticky. M.net has a bunch of threads, with conflicting info, as usual.

1. One of the commercially available kits says to remove the tops of the spark plugs, leaving the threaded part exposed. Is this standard? I'm using Toyota coils, and they have a spring inside which contacts the top of the plug. The other kit instructions I've found make absolutely no mention of this.

2. What to do about existing stock coil connectors? Cut them off, leave them but tape them up, or just let them hang there? Does it matter at all?

3. Several places mention adjusting dwell. Since I'm still on the stock ECU, this isn't something I can do. Will this destroy the cops? Any way to mitigate it until the MSPnP install? I have a harness I bought from one of the members here. It appears to have a capacitor wired in and covered in heat shrink tubing.

Since electrical stuff is mostly greek to me, I appreciate any assistance.

1. Toyota COP shouldn't require modifying the spark plugs.

2. Leave the coil plugs alone, tape them if you want.

3. Others will chime in if I'm wrong, but the Toyota coils life span will be shortened with the stock ecu settings. The capacitor wired in is to prevent voltage drop. Save up for a megasquirt or buy spare coils.

You absolutely cannot run toyota cops on stock dwell, they will fry. Miata run something like 4.0ms, Toyota cops want little more than half as much.

Toyota cops are weak and fragile, overdwelling them will kill them in no time. The capacitor does nothing for dwell. Remove cops till you get aftermarket ECU, no reason to have them on there yet anyway.

I am installing them because of a hesitation issue, which I believe may be the stock coils dying. If putting them in pre MSPnP will kill them, I'm screwed.

If stock dwell is 4ms could op run LS coils? I don't think I've ever heard of anybody doing it on the stock ecu, but that dwell should work, right?

*Edit: Plus then you're on bauce coils instead of janky old Toyota cops.

Toyota cops are fine on stock ecu. there was only issues running them on the NB ecu. they have overdwell protection built in.

Doesn't overdwell protection fire them when you reach max dwell, thus effectively advancing your timing by a random amount?

That is exactly what d585 ls2 truck coils do. Save the coils, blow the motor.

They worked on the 94 ecu for the 4 or so months I ran them a couple years ago. I replaced them with the 01+ coils that were on the vvt motor I put in.

Well, it's only for as long as it takes to get the car inspected, then the new ECU goes in. Hopefully no issues for a few hundred miles.

no, there were plenty of people running the toyota cops on stock ECUs. it was when the NB owners started trying they had issues.
