With all the trouble that people go to in installing an intercooler, I wonder why many people don't remove the coolant lines that go to the intake manifold? Has anyone disconnected theirs and have they seen any gains from doing so?

from what ive seen the gains are negligible. It is mainly there just to keep ice from forming on the TB and the air doesnt spend enough time in the TB to make a difference.

But its not just the TB that's heated, its the entire plenum. I'm pretty sure there's as much volume in there as a good-sized intercooler. Removing those lines should theoretically yield atleast a 5 or 10 degree drop in intake temps right?

Unless I'm missing something here.......to my knowledge there is no valve which controls flow of coolant into the manifold jacket. In other words coolant is always circulating through there.

surface area to volume is very small in the plenum compared to an intercooler... and yeah the icing.

i removed mine, just take the coolant line from the thermostat housing and cut it and end it at the head bypassing the intake manifold and throttle body. I run an mspnp so i don't think it's at all necessary. the more stuff you can take out and don't need the better

I removed mine. Didnt notice any difference anywhere. I just did it to make getting to the injectors easier.

no, right after i was done i cleaned up the car, then took it to my grandparents garage for the winter where it's sleeping now, i will note that it didn't act any different than it did before

because you have to remove or plug the wax valve, first!
then an aftermarket ECU to control the idle because the stock one expects the wax valve.

btw, its only the 1.6's that have the coolant running through the intake manifold.

wax valve?! wtf.

all you have to do is plug the line from the IM and the line from the water neck....the end.

you can block and remove the AIR valve if you want like i posted above...this will not fail your emissions....
