Enter the 3M headlight restoration system

Rough write-up:

Skipped the 500 grit disk on front right headlight (uhh I guess I called it "left" since I was working from the front). Used it on the second. I think it's useful and goes faster using this.

I did a fairly fast job on this and in retrospect should have spent another few minutes on each headlight with the 500 to remove more of the hazy, yellow layer.

other notes:

Masking tape doesn't stick when wet sanding.

polish from the pad will fling all up in your business. I had the hood open to save a little masking and had to wipe down some spots.

DO IT BEFORE YOU WASH YOUR CAR.

I have no idea what 1500 rpm is on my drill. it has an adjustable trigger stop and I just held it down at whatever that was set at and it was fine.

stop often and clean sanding disk.

Overall, I'm content. especially since it looks better, didnt take long, and I will be selling car.

actually
I think i'm most impressed at the last two before-after shots. they appear to be composed from exactly the same spot. which--if you consider they were taken 1 hour and 20 minutes apart without any measurements or tripod or anything--is pretty good.

Probably

Someone told me using that lamin-x crap helps a ton...Couple other people actually had them clear coated around here. No idea if either of those work

Gots to remember to wax the headlights after you finish. The wax protects them from the UV rays. And keep waxing them every time you wax the rest of the car.

This. I've gone 2+ years after refinishing with regular waxing.
