Default Stolen parts on craigslist

Looking for craigslist horror stories about stolen parts. Found a good deal on an exhaust and am just wondering what's the actual chance of me getting into trouble.

I had a story earlier this year - was looking for a used 1.8 engine+trans. Posted a WTB on craigslist and was contacted by some politically-incorrect-sounding guy. He said he had an engine/trans for sale and that "his garage" would even install it for me - but wouldn't give me the address of this "garage". After I got suspicious and asked him for the VIN number off the transmission, he told me I asked too many questions and never called me back

So, any other stories like this? The exhaust in question was apparently installed on a 91 miata. No pictures, very little info. Seller sounds like he has no idea what he's talking about..... Did anyone had a turbo 91 miata /w 2.5" exhaust stolen in DC area recently?

It's probably a "bad idea" in general to buy hot stuff.

if you're afraid of buying stolen **** then don't buy used parts. anywhere. ever.
buy everything at the store or from a vendor.

that's the only way to be SURE what you're buying is legit.

in other words, stop being a ***** or don't shop on craigslist.

I wanted to comment on the "Mexican" thing...but Hustler covered it mostly. The accent would have been Hispanic however...and "Mexican sounding" really does make you look like an idiot. Besides, everyone that's ever robbed, scammed or stolen from me has been white. I found a cheap set of wheels the other day on CL...but after calling about them and hearing a "white sounding" guy I decided not to take the chance.

Sometimes people don't give VINs because they are lazy...and some shops do get motors from theft recoveries.

Really, everyone is going to get their panties in the bunch over that comment? Ok, I'll edit the post.

I've bought plenty of used parts. There's a big difference between sellers and it's pretty clear when you're dealing with a legitimate, knowledgeable owner or someone who just got the parts 2 days ago. Have yet to be scammed.

I just wanted to hear about other people's experiences, but I guess it's easier to QQ. Going to see the exhaust tonight, will post results later.

Don't care if it's legit or not, or a knock-off made in china, or whatever.
Do care if I come across the original owner of the part I bought, and find out it was stolen from her/him (am I doing this politically correctness thing right?).

1) We don't drive civics or integras: the ammount of stolen parts for our cars isn't anything you'll have a 20 page thread about.
2) You yourself mentioned that with logic and common sense you can pretty much make a judgement call on whether someone is selling stolen parts.

We use both those to access the situation and determine whether to buy or not.

BTW: I bought my miata from a complete retard who listed it on craigslist as a parts car. The most retarded/poorly written/spelled monstrosity of a classified ad I've seen in my life.

I made the trip (4 hours) and checked it out anyways.
It was dirty and had a messed up fender but otherwise a nice white nb with a clean title and he was the original owner. I got it for a helluva deal.

Had I not taken the time to check it out I probably would have spent the same ammount of money on a beat up high mileage na from someone that didn't sound stupid.

I called on a car once and even though it was a great deal I didn't end up going to check it out. The guy sounded kinda German and I was worried he would put me in his oven.

IMO that makes no difference. See hustler's top and this thread. Miatas are easy to steal.

And my judgement is that the exhaust is off a stolen car. However, it's a great deal and my moral values are pretty low. Hence, going to see it tonight.
