Default wideband bung on stock NA downpipe

Is there enough room for someone to weld in a bung for a WB on the stock NA downpipe at a reasonable angle (10 degree incline or greater) right before the cat without dropping the exhaust?

The reason I ask is I'm having a hell of a time finding a shop that will touch the pre-cat exhaust and the place that I found only deals with GM cars. I don't want to pay them $$$ just to figure out how to remove the downpipe. Worst case I just bring the downpipe in with a mark where to put the bung, but I'm lazy and would prefer to just drive the car in.

I paid 45 to have it done at an exhaust shop. If I were to do it again I would just mark the spot and bring the pipe in to avoid silly labor costs.

Thanks for the pic. I guess I'll be pulling off the downpipe Friday night.

Mike, have you talked to Modern Muffler? They're on El Camino right by Lawrence Expressway.

make sure you mark it first so you get the orientation right. it would suck if you got it back and it hits the trans or tunnel

Not yet, I figured they wouldn't do it since the other places I talked to in the area wouldn't. That would be badass if they'll do it since I can basically walk there with the pipe. I'm a dumbass for not asking them first.

Modern sort of specializes in a lot of custom/high performance stuff. Definitely more gearhead-oriented than most. If anyone were to go welding stuff onto my BEGI DP, I'd want it to be them.

Got this done for $25 in case anyone reads this thread and wants to do the same. Hardest part was getting all the nuts off to pull the downpipe.

wouldnt it be easier to replace the stock o2 with the WB and output a 0-1v signal with the LC-1 to the ecu ?!

That would kill the WB O2 sensor, waaay too hot for it.

I guess that would depend on how you feel about cracking open your floorboard carpeting and cutting/splicing wires on your main harness versus turning wrenches to remove your DP. Kinda depends on what mood I'm in on any given day.

I didn't want to splice the NB wiring and I don't trust the LC1 to last as long as the NB. And mostly I just don't trust my wiring skills. It's nice that I now can setup the WB and only rely on data from it for changing the tune. Also, this way when I finally get the money together for the begi s2 I can just drop the stock pipes and swap my NB and WB into the two bungs on their DP.

not to sound like a newb but why is that spot more advantageous for wiring than the factory narrow band location.

It's all part of my master plan for turbo'ing my 97 - a plan which I'm sure has flaws. I was just going to follow these steps:
  1. Install MSPNP.
  2. Install WB. Mess around with tune.
  3. Install injectors. Clean up VE tables.
  4. Install turbo kit. Tune.
  5. ???
  6. Profit

Someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but it would be extra work to install the WB in the factory NB location and wire it in the engine bay and then later have to move it by the tranny to support the turbo. I don't like running the wires by the exhaust for too long. Plus I would have to install the WB correctly or I could have issues with the car. Now when I finally get around to installing the WB on my stock car I can just take the sensor out and put it in the new DP which will have a bung real close to where the pictured bung was just welded on.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH I hope somebody else got that reference.

Good luck with your build, I wish I had the money to start hooking up electronics in preparation for a turbo, but there isn't much point when it doesn't look like I will have a turbo for a long time.
