Default HKS SSQBOV-question

I have developed what I think is compressor surge. The best way to describe it is a loud flutter or air is rushing back through the air filter. It happens during any kind of throttle lift. I searched through the site to see if anyone else has had this problem with their HKS and how they solved it. I found the graphite lube solution, and that didn't work. Has anyone ever taken one apart, cleaned, and reassembled with success? Any ideas?

Dunno, but I just bought a knockoff tial BOV. Supposedly it's a diaphragm setup not a piston setup. Is yours a piston/o-ring setup?

I think it is a diaphram, not 100% sure though. I have the older model and it doesn't have a set screw at the top either. I may just have to do some exploratory surgery, and see if it is gunked up. I don't want to open it up if isn't supposed to be. Back in June I had an Exxon Valdez oil flood from a blocked breather line. I cleaned out the FMIC and the charge pipes as good as I could. The BOV was working fine, and has been until recently. I think there is some crud in there that may be causing it to stick.

The HKS SSQV is easy to dismantle and equally easy enough to clean. I had the older type HKS as well without the set screw, but never had any issues with it during 4 years of usage. I now have a knockoff one that I have dismantled to check it out and it was pretty straightforward.

I couldn't imagine what you could have inside of it that would keep it from releasing though. I assume the vacuum line going to the BOV isn't cracked, ripped, or off?

From what I have heard the SSQV valve makes a fluttering sound normally. Check out the numerous videos on youtube and see if it is the same sound you are hearing. It sounds like compressor surge, but a little different.

DVCN (mt.n poster) runs a SSQV, you might ask him. I drove his car once but cannot remember what the flutter was like.

I don't have this one on youtube so I have to link it.....

MySpaceTV Videos: Before winter by Joe

That's how my HKS always blew off. When I had it unhooked I would get the flutter (compressor surge). But by no means does the HKS itself flutter.

Vash-That is how mine used to blow off, more like a high pitched chirp.

I removed the BOV from the flange and the unit moves freely enough. There wasn't any oil residue or build up of any kind. I didn't have the right size socket or wrench to remove the top of the BOV, so I used some more graphite lube on the moving parts and injected some lube into the sensor port. I took it for a drive and I was able to hear some faint chirping, but still it was over-powered by the sound of the air coming back through the air filter. I am going to change the feed for the senor line and see if that makes a difference. If that doesn't work I will replace the line. Thanks for the input guys, I feel I am getting closer to getting it worked out.
