Default Hacked up my fenders to fit the 275’s.

Well I finally bit the bullet and hacked up my fenders to fit the 275’s.

I took the springs off and did a whole bunch of articulation studies on my car getting the clearance envelope right. Found with the 949 wheels the minimum spacer that would work was 15mm, any less and the rear hits the tire sidewall on the inside at full bump and the front has serious interference with the top of the shock attachment area. 15mm works ok in the front but still sacrifices a bit of bump travel. 20mm spacer in the front would get a tad more bump travel before the tire rubs the fender by the shock top. My big hollow RB swaybar would rub at full lock but my ISC bar has a plenty of clearance. If you space out the front much more than with a 20mm spacer then you start having serious issues with clearance to the seam weld at the back of the wheel well when turning. You wouldn’t be able to turn with 0 offset wheels the tire would hit the front and back of the wheel opening. Ideal wheel offset would be in the ET 15-20mm range for the 225/45/15 tires.

Another thing I noticed is when I put my 225/50/15 V710’s on they hit the top of my fender wells centered over the tire when it is sitting on the bumpstops. Confirms my polish marks left there. Any bigger diameter would mean limiting some more bump travel or tubbing the fenders.

The Autokonexion version 2 flares barely fit the tires which was what I was looking for since these will likely only be used for autocross. I didn’t want unnecessarily wide flares for my track tires or street tires.

I like your car. Thats what I think it should look like. Beeing a sports car and all. How do you like the wing? Did you mount it without the 6in extentions? If so how was it?

Have a great day,
Jared

I wanted the wing up where it would be the most functional. Well above any turbulent separation flow coming off the back window. Anything low looks like Ricer garbage to me and likely doesn’t work well. I haven’t track tested with the wing yet but I can tell from driving some 90 mph speeping 90 degree turns near my way to work the difference the wing and the front splitter make is huge. Likely to cut some lap time off I think. The wing is a universal fit one and I mounted it to custom brackets I made that mount it to the fender in the gap between the fender and the trunk. So it is nice and solidly mounted rather than on rubbery trunk lid. I have two 2.5” risers on each side. So it is 5” lift. Also with my mounting it comes off easily and leves no visible holes in the trunk.

I took it for a short drive today on the 275’s. Dam state cop stopped me for no front plate. I haven’t mounted it yet since the lip spoiler and splitter mess with how it was mounted. He asked “Are those some kind of drifting tires?” didn’t give me a ticket.

Got lucky on that one. Did you do a write up on th etrunk mounting? I would like to put a wing on one day and was thinking about getting an extra lid so that I could swap them out befor and after a track day.

Have a great day,
Jared

Lol gotta love the WSP... I'm suprised he didn't give you a ticket.

Car looks great, would it help to fabricate an offset upper shock mount for more clearance?

I have custom modified NB top hats and I trimmed them so there not in the way like shown in the picture and I’m already running 2.25” ID springs. The shape of the fender in the area near the shock mount is the limiting factor. It is thick hard metal in that area so a BFH won’t move it. Cutting it out and welding in a different shape would do it.

Wow bob, you're car has really evolved this winter. Cant wait to check it out.

Have you done anything with your old hollow RB bar yet? I was planning on buying one sometime before next autox season and would happily buy yours off you at some point.

Lookin great!

I have used Racing Beat front and rear bars that I’m willing to part with. I also have a set of Autokonexion type 1 flares that I didn't use.

Next step is spats for the front wheels and canards. I’m trying to figure out the details of how to attach canards if I do the DIY route. The spats seem pretty straight forward they but I don’t get how to attach the canards to the bumper.

Dude, twice in the last month? Is it just because of the wing/splitter/flares that they're finding a reason to pull you over or are they really cracking down around here?

I need to get my plate on...

Yea I think the wing and splitter are eye catching or something the car has become a cop magnet. The time a few weeks ago was in a school zone and I followed behind my wife by about a minute she didn’t have a front plate on her Mini and didn’t get stopped but I did following shortly behind. I think it has been 9 years since I have gotten a traffic ticket so they check my record and it is always clean. I've been stopped by a Reservation, a County and now a State cop for no front plate.

The GTX doesn't have a front plate on it ether one of two of them that I have that don’t have front plates installed. The Reservation cop that stopped me used that as a reason for stopping me but I think the real reason I think is he saw me come around a sharp U corner at around 3 times the speed that most people take it even though I was not technically speeding nor could he tell how fast I was going. That GTX is fast and corners well. I won the SCCA Street Mod division for the region driving it last year.

Speaking of autox, is your miata still going to be in street mod next year or is it in a different class now with all that new stuff?

I'm obviously looking for some hope that I wont have to compete against you next season

For SCCA The GTX is SM, The miata is SSM. The Miata is technically not legal for national events because of few mods that are outside of the rules which would put it in XP. The NWR supplemental rules allow my Miata to run legally in SSM however at regional events. The competition in SSM for the region is like a super charged Viper and NASCAR powered Corvetts all with big wings and huge tires and such then a few other turbo and supercharged Miatas. I actually think I can beat most of SSM for the NW region. The 275’s might put me in contention for some overall FTD’s. Current competition for that spot is tough as there are some real good drivers. Based on last year it’s a DP Miata an ASP Lotus Exige and a DM Lotus Elan. Some other fast drivers that PAX high might be moving into faster cars next year not sure what some of them are doing. I’m not good enough to rely on my driving talent alone auto crossing I hope they bring slow cars.

The Western Washington series has a class called Open Street, Just got to be pretty much street legal, I like this

Yea Babbs, I think that might hav more national championships than any single car in history. The funny thing is it dosn’t seem to be getting faster and others are. I beat the Babb’s once last year with the Miata but still was beat by Kieth Brown in his DP miata.. Not only is the DP Miata a dam fast car but Kieth generally has the fast PAX time as well, probably the fastest DP in the country only had bad luck with rain at the national finals. Ron Bauer wasn’t running his CSP Miata so he was usually in a slower car. My PAX times for SSM rarely make it into the top 20. I need a way faster car and drive really good to beat these guys. Lots of fast people in the region and really my car is still set up more as a track car than an autocross car I autocross simply because I think it improves my driving and I like competition the track is what I really enjoy. The tires, springs, and aero changes I think will help make it more competative this coming year.
