Default Tear down and resurrection to begin...

After spending some time at the miata.net forums, I was told by a friend that this is the better place for me. I see some names here that I think were there, so some of you may know the story.

I bought a Miata from a local kid, who is clueless. The original owner (who also installed all the mods) is a friend of my boss, so the cars history has been traced.

Specs:

1992 Miata, paid $1500
-OLD school BEGi S4 turbo kit (manual says 1998!!)- all parts are in excellent condition.
-Roll bar (don't know brand, was told Hard Dog)
-Tokico Blues with coilovers
-RB sways
-RX-7 LSD
-Mazda Comp motor mounts
-Don't know what exhaust
-Don't know what short throw shifter
-17's with new Kuhmo tires.
-Found a Link LambdaLink in the trunk
-Found the BEGi AFPR in the trunk, don't know why it isn't installed
-Found some teen **** mags in trunk
-Found trance CD in deck

Bought car knowing it was 'locked up'. It just clicks when the key is turned, no movement of pulleys. Can't turn the crank by hand either. So I am about to put it in the garage, try a few things, then pull the motor. I was told to check the starter and alternator to see if they locked up. Pull the timing cover and cut the belt to see if the cams turn, and so forth. The plan is to just put in another 1.6 and go on from there. Need to check if it has some EMS, might be the reason the AFPR is not installed.

Any advise is appreciated!

if you want another 1.6 i have a motor lying around i'd sell you. with trans.

sounds like its fried. You can't turn the crank by hand either? thats pretty bad...did you try a giant breaker bar with a pipe on the end for more leverage?

Where are you at? I have one local, but you can't trust junk yards.......

Don't need the trans, but if it is part of the deal....sure. How much are you thinking?

If it just "clicks" it could be a bad starter. And if you can't turn it by hand, it could just be a little bit "stuck" from sitting. I'd put a breaker bar on the crank and see if it rolls over. If it does, fix the starter and do a compression test. Might not need an engine.

Is that Scott Dehaven's old car? I think we may have met before in Rotary circles since I am friends with Dan Chadwick and have been to a few of the gatherings. Let me know if you need any help with the Miata or have any questions. I am in the Boro on the north side.

I know Dan! But I don't know Scott Dehaven. I know the original owner and Scott Cuneo were really good friends, and that the car has been in Middle Tennessee its entire life.

We might have met at some rotary events. Here is what my FC looks like now:

And what it used to look like with the old wheels:

Would that be Steven Cuneo you are referring to instead of Scott? If so, then it is probably Scott Dehaven old car. I know both of those guys were pretty good friends with Carter Thompson and probably each other too.

Dan and I are in the process of rebuilding his engine and another 13B-REW for a customer at the shop right now. I've never owned a rotary, but I have tons of time wrenching on them.

Congrats on getting the Miata, they are tons of fun which you will soon find out.

Sorry, yes it is Steve Cuneo. He emailed me about it, and I couldn't pass it up.

Nice find. I don't see any EMS listed in the parts. Are you handy with electronics? If so; I suggest you look for a thread on the "Useful Saved Post" section detailing how to build one. If not, you can always buy one from DIY Autotune or look around in the f/s section for one.

Edit: I just saw you posted that you needed to see if there was one installed. I think the stock ECU in 1.6 engine cars is in the passenger's footwell. If he was using an MS, you'll find it there.

Try what was suggested about getting a breaker bar on the crank bolt. However, worst case scenario, if you have the same "clicking" I had, you'll open the engine to find something similar to this:

As of today she is now in the garage on jackstands. The RX-7 is jealous, camping in the driveway under a cover.

After the Titans game I am going to go out and try a few things mentioned.

Update. (sort of)

I am still waiting on a guy from work to bring me his engine hoist, so no real progress yet.

I do think I know why it blew thought.

Remember how I said the BEGi AFPR was in the trunk, chillin, not connected to anything? I thought it was odd since the injectors are upgraded (RC), and you know, the turbo and all. So I checked to see if the ECU had been replaced by something like a MS, or a Link.

Negative. Stock ECU running a BEGi S4 minus the AFPR.

Gee, wonder what happened?

More to come.

Any chance he may have just removed the AFPR for some odd reason, after the fact? Sucks to hear about the trouble, but its still a good deal either way for what you paid (I think anyway). Wish I could find something like that.
