I own a 99 and picked up a partial fmII kit. I am amassing all the parts that didnt come with the kit. I should have said parts in a week or so. I really want to strap on the turbo and of course do the clutch. I am without a lift and really dont feel like doing a clutch on my back. PR motorsports quoted me $520 for clutch and flywheel job.

Next, bought a wrecked 10ae I am currently parting out. Keeping the motor, thats it. Going to have at least rods put in maybe a little headwork. Trying to achieve between 15-20 psi safely. If anyone knows a shop in northern california for the motor work?? I am currently researching..

Finally, the turbo setup will be complete and ready to install long before the motor will be. My real question is: Since ill need the clutch from the get go, its probably smarter to wait for the new motor and once the old motor is out do the clutch, oil return etc. right? I would be doing all said work if i had a lift, but i do not. I figure somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000-1500 to swap the motor? So why pay 500+ for a clutch when the tranny has to get swapped? And that would be the perfect time to do the clutch.

Any advice on the dollar figures would be nice. Or if anyone wants to help with the swap and has a spot to do it i would compensate them($$$). I really want to do the work and build MY car. I have much more respect for people that wrench on their own rides than people with deep pockets(just me). I pulled the motor from the 10ae and feel fairly confident i could do it again(however i cut off the front end and pulled it straight out, so a little different with a non wrecked car.)but none the less.

I could have the clutch done and be at 10psi in no time. maybe i just want someone to tell me to go that route, i dont know. I want boost bad. Also doesnt $520 seem super pricey. All data says 3.2 for clutch and .4 for flywheel. $520 for less that 4 hours work i guess. PR motorsports is the spot dont get me wrong but still. thanks mt.

At 10psi on any turbo, a stock clutch won't hold the torque, so it's best to be patient for a stronger one. I would definitely recommend doing the swap yourself to save a lot of $$$. You don't need a lift, just an engine hoist, load leveler, and some tools. Pick up Keith Tanner's workshop book and/or Rod Grainger's 1.8 manual and get started. It took me 2 hours to get the engine/transmission out, and four to get it back in and running for my first time. Swapping clutches with the engine out is incredibly simple, it's 6 bolts bro. Wish I could help, but I'm a little far away.

Just out of curiosity, with your "partial" kit, do you have anything to control fuel and ignition?

He will do a top notch job and 300 is a helluvalot cheaper than 520

The partial kit contained the link piggyback. It was basically a complete kit minus turbo, some hardware, coolant and oil retuen line. Codrus is his name on this forum so maybe you guys caught it in the for sale section a few months back.

My plan originally was have someone do the clutch and at same time do the oil return and then cap the line so i can drive the car home. Then bust down the turbo install and be content(hopefully) with 10psi. I want to do as much as possible, i want to build my ride and after the sexy bitch is done pat myself on the back, ha. I have never owned a turbo miata only various other turboed cars. I have riden in/drove a 94 1.8 with an m45(not enough power for me). A 1.6 at 12 psi that was pretty nice. And an ubercharged Na and that seemed pretty fast(altough seemed like the uber went by the wayside) This was all years ago, fell outta miatas got into srt4's and needless to say that didnt work out. I know the general path of a turboed car and what is needed to obtain a safe set up. Maxed out the stock turbo on the srt including water/meth.

Savington- $300 would probably get me to just get the clutch done and set up the turbo. Who knows maybe 10psi will be enough(but i really doubt it) but maybe for awhile while i build the new motor. And i see you are in SLO. Close enough and damn gotta love some woodstock pizza. If i got the clutch and flywheel and scheduled a time to come down in the morning could I drive home that evening? Also can you do the return line aswell? And I assume there would be a way to cap it off so i can drive home and begin the turbo install? I know I can drive and tap a hole thats not really a problem. It just seems from what ive read that you can mess up things easily and once youve done it a few times its a lot easier. If possible to do it and drive without the turbo being installed i would want you to do this too. Also are you a shop or just a guy in a garage? I dont care either way just a curiousity thing.

18psi- your car is super sexy, just enough mod while keeping the miata look. I see you are a sactown resident. I drive from the bay to placerville regularly and would love to hook up and check out your ride and shoot the **** of course. I recently caught wind of the bay area/sac meet on ncr. Maybe i could check it out if you go to those. Really excited to get back into miatas and very much appreciate the advice and knowledge greater than my own. thanks guys.
