Go back to mnet so you can live in unicorn dream land. Why can't Mazda make engines like Honda? Honda is the #1 manufacturer of internal combustion engines IN THE WORLD. They have the expertise and development. I'm sorry to break it to you that Mazda doesn't have a motorcycle or F1 division to draw experience from, but those are the breaks. The Miata formula has always been the FWD econo motor turned sideways, and huge surprise... the ND is going to have a FWD econo motor turned sideways.

I think that if the rated horsepower is above 165HP, we'll be absolutely golden.
To quote Jalopnik on this one.

Also interesting is the Skyactiv-G engine. We in America get a 2.0 liter Skyactiv-G with 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. You can find that engine in a CX-5, for instance. It is entirely possible that the ND Miata will have a different spec for its engine, however.

Mazda3: 148hp, 135ft-lbs
MX-5: 167hp, 140ft-lbs

I still think that 160-165hp with 155-158ft-lbs is a reasonable expectation for the ND.

I'm going to be awfully disappointed if they just drop the current 155hp skyactiv 2.0L in there. Hopefully there are at least some plans to rework it. I'm like you though, I don't think we'll see 200hp, especially if they managed to drop some weight from the NC.

Why is everyone hung up on the base HP of the car? All previous models had meager amounts and that hasn't stopped us from having some ****-your-pants fast Miatas.

Are we assuming that the free market will not give us a means of slapping a big *** trubo on one and continuing the tradition of embarrassing much more expensive cars in our hairdresser cars?

My only concern with the skyactive G motor is modability. A few people I know running around in the new 3's and 6's have been complaining about how high strung the motors are and not a lot of room to improve upon aftermarket.

Regardless of aftermarket options, any econobox will still run away from a stock car. Be it an na, nb or nc (and now nd). Decent trubo kits and engine swaps will be out for another 2-3 years. At least. It's amazing how Mazda sells a brilliant chassis with an adequate engine (at best) and has been for the past 25ish years.

Then again, it's not the ugliest miata ever produced so there's hope

The reason I want it to be 200hp instead of 165ish is because a car designed for 165 may have a drivetrain that can handle 250-275ish but one designed for 200 will maybe take 300ish. I'm just hopeful for the future capacities to be great enough.

I'm sorry I don't buy that mazda is incapable of building a decent engine (200 NA). If Subaru can do it with a craptasic boxer engine. They should atleast use the 2.5 out of the cx-5

I hear the ND has EPAS.
Guess I was ahead of my time when I converted my power steering to electric assist a while back.

It's not that they can't.
It's that they wont.
No matter how much we cry about it. Believe it or not, but the thousands of old farts that will be buying these new off the lot will consider them really fast and never really mod them.

People like you (and I) that will buy them 10 years later when they're in the teens or under 10 grand........Mazda doesn't really care about those people

I thought the NC also had the EPS just like the RX8. You and I have EHPS.

The NC has hydraulic power steering. Some nerd on Mnet is having a meltdown, it's pretty funny:

I am angry. Really angry.

I hold my tongue about most designs because I am not the target market, but this car, I AM THE TARGET MARKET.

The worst part is knowing that every time I see one of these things I will see a great opportunity lost. Gone. Over.

The car has wonderful overall proportions, and that's what makes the designer's crime all the more vile. Sick. Awful.

They destroyed it for no other reason than to stroking their own egos. In the end they'll know they failed. The car isn't great, and it could have been. It'll go down as just a footnote to the NA.

This small, tight, pure little machine should not be infected, festooned or decorated with the trite, weakass nonsense crap of some clueless egotistical designer or design boss.

One of the forum members once asked why all cars can't be beautiful.

Well here's the reason. HUMAN NATURE.

They can't help getting their egos involved. They want to put their fingerprints on it, "sign it", graffiti-ize it. Oh and they did. I can think of a few other phrases and words that describe what they did but are not fit for this forum.

A beautiful design requires restraint, maturity and discipline on the part of the designer. An Aston V8 Vantage, a E46 M3, a Cord 810 all from the heart. All pure.

How quickly stupidity and ego can turn an E-type into a Daimler Dart.

The only reason I am not screaming "moron!" to the people that say they like the car is because I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. I think that what they are seeing are the great overall proportions and not the detail warts and tortured surfaces from the design team. I can't live with those. I will not buy one. EVER.
