Default I think I got sent the wrong water pump, can you identify it?

I am in the middle of changing the water pump and everything else.... I bought most of the stuff from Moss. However the water pump that they sent me doesn't look exactly like the one that came off of my car. The one that they sent me came in a Mazda box with the part number B660-15-010E, which they and Suburban Mazda tell me is an updated number (my 1990 parts manual shows #8AB8-15-010) . The one that came from Moss has an extra tab on the left side (if you are facing the engine from the front of the car). That tab interferes with the alternator bracket. I think that the pmup that they sent me is for a 1.8, but I am not sure. Autozone website shows the pic of my old pump for a 90-93, and the pump that they sent me as 94+. But another parts site showed those pix backwards. Can anyone here tell from experience that the one that they sent me is a 94+?

Water pump that came off my car:

Water pump Moss sent me:

Size: 51.4 KB

Label on the Moss WP box:

Size: 84.0 KB

Everything else looks the same on these two parts. I was thinking I could grind off that tab (I don't know if everything else is exactly the same)... but will wait for Moss to call me back.

Anyone know a good site to reverse search Mazda part numbers?

I'm pretty sure that the 1.6 and 1.8 WP is the same, but I can't verify that as I've never built a 1.8. I do know though that the last 2 motors I've built the water pump I was sent was to like an escort or some **** even though I ordered a miata pump. I guess they assumed that they were the same since they used the same engine. The issue with those pumps was that the tensioner bearing mount hole was like 1/2" offset further from the block and it wasnt threaded. Very strange. In both instances I just went to Vatozone and bought a pump there. They stock them, and its pretty cheap at like $40-50.

Honestly the only reason that I was changing the water pump is because I was doing everything else. Maybe I should just throw the only one back in? It doesn't have any play, didn't leak and turns fine.

You'll be missing the topmost attachment point for the alternator if you try swapping a 1.6 water pump onto a 1.8 and will be unable to tension it. I found this out the hard way. As a side note, bungee chords make acceptable alternator tensioners.

You should be fine with a 1.8 water pump. That's what they sent you. Notice the eyelet on the left side of it in the picture.

I can't install that WP on my car because my alt bracket is in the way. It won't physically fit.

Oh! Well, nevermind about that part. You could probably cut off the eyelet if you're in a hurry, assuming that won't cause any sealing problems. Or switch to a 1.8 alternator bracket. Otherwise, you're SOL it seems.

1.6 Water Pump at Autozone
1.8 WP at Autozone

1.6 WP Partsdinasaur
1.8 WP Partdinasaur

Damn I have been trying to get someone at Moss since 10:30 this morning. Are they always this prompt?

The part numbers are different but they look identical sans that tab on the 1.8. Even both pages list b6 and bp compatibility.

I would not be suprised if a 1.6 WP works perfectly on a 1.8 considering they also use the same OP, TB, TB Bearings.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe I could just grind off that tab (keeping the pump protected from debris of course). But I was hoping that someone had already dont this. I don't want to be suprised if it doesn't work

OR: You could get 1.8 tensioner bracket. See below.

The 1.8 bracket would definitely be an upgrade weight-wise.

By how many ounces??? The original owner had it undercoated so I wouldn't even make up that weight! Besides if I have a choice of alt bracket on steel or cast aluminum, I'll go with the steel one. I had more than one break in Chevy Astro vans.

Besides I hate it when PO's "upgrade" something to another year. It never gets documented and then you are left pulling your hair out trying to figure out the right part. It is bad enough when a mistake is made, I hate introducing them.

Also the part where the tensioner wheel mounts is different. On the 1.8 the flat is larger, the hole for the TW mounting bolt is larger, and it isn't threaded. Does it mount on the block? On the 1.6 part the hole is treaded and the TW bolt threads into that.

Moss was helpful, but busy. Ken Martin was the guy I talked to and really nice. But in the end with the weekend and all it was going to be a bit more for the car to be down so I bought the part from Autozone. I didn't try there first because I wanted a new one and I thought that they would only carry reman. Just have to wait for the sun to go down a bit more and cool off to get started.

Here's the breakdown on alternator tensioner brackets, based on me going out and looking at mine.

The tensioner bolt assemblies are the same.

Both brackets are made of pressed steel.

Draw your own conclusion here. I couldn't measure how much the tab on the 1.8 water pump weighs, but that probably isn't even 2 ounces.

You would've been fine if you just hacked the tab off of the 1.8 pump, it even has a line for you to cut across, lol. What were you referring to by "tensioner wheel"?

The timing belt tensioner. On the 1.6 pump the pump is threaded for the tensioner. The 1.8 pump (or whatever it is) is not threaded. Instead of threads, the hole is much larger. What does the TB tensioner thread into on the 1.8? Or maybe that isn't a 1.8 WP I had? All I know is that it came in a box with Mazda and Moss part numbers for a 1.6 WP, but it isn't.

I see what you are saying about the weight, and it might make sense on a racer, or a more dedicated enthusiast.... but I probably have 10 times that weight in puppy toys in the trunk

Either way I don't think that it was much of a mistake that Moss could have prevented, and they were helpful. Although speaking just about time, I did just source the WP at Autozone.

The WP on the left came off of my 1990 1.6, the WP on the right came in the box with MOSS and MAZDA 1.6WP part numbers.

Closeup of the timing belt tensioner on the 1.6WP that came off of my 1990:

Note that the hole in the MOSS WP is not threaded, and it is larger that the one that came off of my car (and the one thatI got from AUtozone). The bore looks like it has the origianal casting finish. I do not think that it has been drilled out, factory or otherwise.

Question: How does the timing belt tensioner mount on a 1.8? If it mounts like a 1.6 (ie the bolt threads onto the WP) then maybe this isn't a 1.8WP? Someone here must have experience with 1.6 & 1.8.

It is going back to MOSS for a refund, I am just curious as to what they sent.

You're correct!

I went and looked where you're talking about. While I don't have my 1.8 block today, the 1.8 WP won't bolt onto the 1.6 block because there aren't threads on the 1.6 block where the timing belt tensioner goes. I don't have to block to look at, but the 1.8 must have a wider casting right there with a threaded hole for the Timing belt tensioner. I fail!

Therefore the 1.8 water pump won't work on a 1.6, and vice versa, without modification. You could fill the unthreaded hole with alumaloy, and tap it for threads.
