Here's a copy of the second email he just sent me. Regarding a group buy.

we would like to accept group buying and offer the reasonable discount as wholesale price.but we suggest that you take one first as a sample so you will know how good of our carbon item quality.

due to your adress in USA,so this carbon item will be shipped from our manufacture warehouse in Japan or China depend the further information not from UK this time,we do it for EURO customers only.to your adress,it will take 7-9 working days to be with you.

total price is 1360 USD depends on todays currency exchange rate.
thanks

I'm gonna keep talking with him. Like I said I NEED it, and soon. So I'm gonna see what he can do for me if I buy the initial one, do the test fit and take a million pictures, then try and make some more sales. I'm definitely going to speak with the man on the phone to put some pressure on and make sure everything's legit. If all goes well, I should order it within a week I'd say.

Anyone that would be interested, post up. 15lbs, I cant wait to just lift it off the car with my head and walk around with it.

Ok, I'll keep communication with the seller going on price negotiating. He mentioned nothing about duty fees, simply $190 (129GBP) to ship it to the US.

In the meantime, I'd like a show of hands for those that would be down to get one of these. I want to get the best price possible, I would say at least 3 people, hopefully 6 or more.

I sent another email with a few more questions regarding the hardware and the lexan window. I will update later on that.

So right now I have myself and;

1. 50trimrecord

Rather than start a new thread, I guess I'll do it here.

I forgot the seller emailed me better pictures lastnight. I assume he wouldn't send one with a huge scratch in it, so I would ignore that part of the picture.

He probably don't mention it because it won't be him who will pay it if there are duty fees and once the stuff is shipped, he don't give a ****. "Reminder: U.S. Customs and Border Protection holds the importer - YOU - liable for the payment of duty not the seller."(Took on the US Customs website)

You should ask US Customs to ask what is the % to pay because I'm pretty sure you will have to pay. I think you'll be surprised... not in the good way. USA is known to have a highly protective plan against import goods so they have a high duty fees to discourage importers and encourage local economy.

I could be wrong too, but I would be surprised.

In the last emailed I asked him more about the shipping and duty fees and such. He said it ships from Japan, not the UK.

Ok, so here's the word thus far. 10% off the top, then $190 to ship it. This is if at least 6 of us get one.

It will take approximately 7-9 business days to get here. He will also ship them as "samples" to avoid duty fees. Additionally, he said he can ship them via sea container for a cheaper price, but it'll take 30 days or so, and you would have to pay the duty fees and whatever else on your own.

The window is made with PMMA glass, he says its much stronger and lighter than OEM. He also says the fitment is very good. And it does indeed only weigh 7.1kgs! (15.6lbs)

I'm linking him to this thread.

If someone wants to buy two I'll trade you my mint condition black hardtop with defroster for one. I don't have any liquid cash and I no longer have a soft top so I can't sell it in advance. Just putting it out there...

Has he actually sold one to a real person in the U.S. that we might be able to speak with?

you should probably put a link to this thread/group buy up on m.net and cr.net, I'm sure you'll get some customers from there.

Vash -

If you look at the reflection on the lower picture, you'll realise the "scratch" in the window is actually the reflection of a power or telephone line.

I'd like to join the list of buyers, but can't until after Christmas is paid for and I see how much I'll owe the taxman...

For somebody who really needs a hardtop for winter, I'd say you should stick with used OEM for 1/2 the price. If you're of a mind to be a guinea pig, then that's really cool... but the questions of heat/cold transmission, noise, stiffness, fitment, longevity... the fact that it's made in China? I have seen some SHITTY CF hoods that started delaminating (is that the right word when talking about CF) within a couple months.

Does SpecMiata mandate an OEM hardtop? Why aren't those guys using CF units?

Can they come painted? How does the glaze (again, wrong word?) stand up to painting? I thought CF had to be painted raw.

Just trying to make sure you've thought it out. You can find OEM hardtops for $700 or even less... which leaves $700 you can spend on a new set of 225's or decent shocks/sways, or a 50shot kit and some drag rubber.
