Default no start problem

ok so long story short, my trusty miata failed to start today after work.

it cranks, but doesn't fire

I have had it for close to a year and this is the first time it has let me down

should I be able to hear the fuel pump run when cranking? any ideas on what I should check? keep in mind that right now its sitting in a snow filled parking lot on base.
I took a quick look under the hood, no obvious problems, jiggled most wires/connectors, fiddled with the clutch switch bypass jumper...no luck

thanks

List of mods, including year of car would probably be helpful.

There is a little black box on the driver's side wall of the engine bay. Open that and put a small wire into it connecting 'fuel pump' and 'ground.' Pretty sure there is a diagram on the cover of the box, or on the inside of the cover, with a diagram of what is what. I think they are abbreviated FP and GND.

Turn the key to 'on,' and you should hear the fuel pump turn on.
