do some searching, I don't think it's possible without some HKS device that is discontinued. the voltages are read in reverse from the 1.6 to 1.8 and the device flips them and allows the use of the MAF.

1.8 maf uses a hot element in the flow meter, as air passes it , it cools and the current through it increases. The ecu uses the current to calculate flow.
The flapper door vaf uses voltage as a signal reference.
Basically you cant make the MAf work as you cant control the current and voltage through it, let alone read it and convert it to something the ecu will understand.
It like having a wideband O2 sensor without the wideband controller....useless.
give up....your sanity will thank you.

doesn't the emanage allow you to select different mafs?

The problem isn't feeding the Emanage, which will accept just about any signal. The OEM ECU requires the correct voltage signal to function. I have heard that the Emanage Ultimate can fake that signal to eliminate MAF completely, but others would need to chime in to verify.

This is true; there's at least one fella on M.net who posted his experience eliminating the AFM with the e-Manage Ultimate.

It can't be done, the ecu isn't capable.

Are you referring to the e-Manage Ultimate or the stock ECU?

Ramboturbo ... don't give away the MAF just yet. It just requires a simple signal inverter you can make for probably under $10 with Radio Shack on shelf parts. I know where the schematic is in the garage, and will dig it out and post here. Was going to convert myself from the AFM to MAF several years ago, just never ran across a cheap MAF.

The MAF is smaller in size, flows 300 cfm vs the 270 cfm of the AFM. The hot wire system is much faster and precise than the flapper door so will eliminate most "Tip-In" added by removing both helmholtz chambers from the stock intake.

Well, I don't think it'll be quite that easy. The MAF/hotwire sensor is also tuned (I believe) to be used with 1800cc of displacement along with 230cc injectors of the '94+ cars. Also, you're going to want some sort of air temp sensor. The 1.6L AFMs have the sensor built-in to the AFM housing inlet. The later cars had a separate sensor, as I recall, that was just downstream of the hotwire. Perhaps you could get a hold of the later temp. sensor and wire that into the AFM harness in place of the original one.

I just purchased a GM map sensor, air intake sensor and boost solenoid the other day in anticipation of an ECU that a couple friends and I are working on. We're going to have the boost control solenoid working in the next few weeks, hopefully, and down the road, we anticipate moving to the speed density system so I can get rid of my RX-7 AFM I'll keep you guys posted.

This will be part of our larger goal to get an e-Manage-like device out on the market.

Found the schematic but is a copy of a copy I got from Norm Garrett about 10 years ago. Sitting in the garage did not enhance the clarity enough to copy it again. Will redraw it and host the image here.

Unable to talk with any tools concerning anything additional that may be needed or even seen it done. Don't think there is much to it that would be difficult to figure out. I was an electronics engineer in a former life before becoming a retired domestic prince.

Pop- I'd been tinkering with this idea a while back but sorta set it aside. Did you ever happen to dig up that old schematic? I'd be interested to see what y'all came up with. (and I still have an old 1.8 MAF sitting on the shelf)

I'm guessing something along the lines of an inverting op-amp?

Yeah, even thought the originator of this post has been banished into oblivion, I'm still really interested in the schematic.

There was a at least one big discussion on Miata.net not that long ago on why it wouldn't work (and why Norman Garrett was wrong).
