What lives behind the firewall in this area? I'll need to recess the firewall a few inches to clear the high pressure fuel pump on an Ecoboost.

Mostly the HVAC box. Honestly the dash is like 5 bolts, you'll probably want to take it out and measure before bashing anything in.

There will be no bashing. This photo is just something I found using Google image search. I'm not anywhere close to being ready, but you're right. I should investigate. The plan would be to build an aluminum "bucket" with a flange that would bolt into the firewall with gasket material between them. If there's barely any interference, I wouldn't have an issue with taking a heat gun to the HVAC box. The thing is, I want the engine to sit as far back as I can manage, but the high pressure pump is a huge wart on the back of the head.

IIRC the heater core sits fairly close to the firewall there.

I'm impressed you can fit inside of a dash. I probably could only fit half of myself in one.

See where it sits? This is actually a GDi engine without turbo, but the location of the pump is the same.
