Default Race Miata Questions

Hey everyone, name Fady I know and I know I haven’t made an intro thread but I’ve been lurking for some time now. I was hoping you guys can provide me some guidance. I currently have a 90 Miata that is strictly a track car. It’s completely gutted and has a pretty nice suspension setup. On to what I need help with…
I am currently looking at a few options but need some guidance as far as the “gotchas”

Option one: Boost the OEM 1.6L Shortnose. I take it I will have to replace the stock clutch/flywheel and diff? Nice thing about this option is you can pick up a 1.6L for pretty cheap once this goes out.

Option two: Buy a 99 engine and do a swap. I know that I will for sure need to do something regarding the return-less fuel system on the 99 engine but what else should I be aware of? Should I try to get the 99 ECU and wiring harness? Engine is going to run me $500

Option three: Buy a 99 engine, boost it, then do the swap. Should I try to get the 99 ECU and wiring harness then use the E-Manage. My tuner is not a fan of MegaSquirt and also boomslang makes a nice little plug and play harness.

Thanks in advance guys

option 4) swap in 01+ vvt motor with bolt ons and have a dead reliable track car. then boost it if your driving skill exceeds the 120-140whp power level.
That seems to be a popular/proven reliable combo lately.

Your tuner is an idiot if he would prefer an emanage to a MS.

ill let him know you said so FYI my tuner is responsible for the tune in half of the cars in a little something called the Modified Tuner Shootout since the event began in which his car also competes i think he will be able to tune the miata

my tuner likes the megasquirt better than many other systems.

To swap in an 01 is no harder then swapping in a 99. Search the forums and bit and you will find several threads about it.

I could really care less about what your tuner has done, if he is recommending a piggyback over a full stand alone system then he is an idiot. If you really thing that reason to go with it is because it has a PNP harness. Hell you can buy an MSPNP for not much more then the EM and it is PNP and does a megashitton more the EM.

Also what type of racing do you do? Setting up a car for autocross is different then setting up a car for track use.

Takes just a tiny bit more work than the 99-00 swap.

And I don't give a **** if your tuner invented tuning, its just common sense and logic: if a tuner prefers an old, inferior, outdated, and very limited piggy back, to a MUCH more advanced, and pretty much better in EVERY WAY engine management unit they are either smoking crack or retarded.

Its like saying you prefer carburators to fuel injection, or band aids to an EMS.

Its 2011. No one uses Emanage on track cars or any serious build anymore.

You may trust your tuner, but he hasn't done his homework on miatas. Sure he can tune it with an emanage, but why would you want to spend more money to have less functionality and be gimped with the factory ecu? DIY and others make a PnP megasquirt, no need for a boomslang harness.

You don't need to believe us. You'll find out for yourself eventually .

for the sake of argument, i will use the MS (dont want the thread to revolve around that but i do appreciate the input and will further research that when the time actually comes). I do track racing, the current turbo i have is T25 not sure about the trims but the a/r on the intake .48 on a/r on the exhaust is .49.

The main goal of the build is reliability and fast spooling times, not really going for all out power. Again, thank you and i will do some more research on what is best to tune.

What is your "pretty nice suspension setup?"

Of your list, I would get the '99 motor and boost it. If you want the ultimate in peak torque and spool, keep that .49 A/R T25 and get a 10:1 VVT motor to go along with it. You should make ~200whp and ~180wtq, with peak torque from ~3000rpm up.

ground control coilovers, KYB adjustable dampers, Flyin` front and rear sway bars. Car is fully corner/cross balanced. Rolling on RA1s.

Seems like the 01 swap is pretty popular on here. Ill try to do a search and find some write up. Problem is i dont think i can beat that $500 deal on the 99'

If it was my car, and I didn't have the mountains of b6 parts laying around. I'd buy a 99 motor, throw rods and pistons at it, get it dialed in for 6 months to a year, then add boost.

If I wasn't looking for a bunch of power and wanted quick response, I would do the 1.6 motor with a supercharger. Could tune something like that quite easily with an emanage, and very reliable. You don't have to worry about bolts backing off on the turbo, under hood temps, etc.

Emanage is pretty garbage for a custom turbo setup btw. Don't use it.

you've forgotten more about the emanage than many will ever learn about the MS.
