Default Is it safe to use brake parts cleaner to remove oil residue?

Hey all,

New to the forum not to Miatas and had a general question about how safe it is to use brake parts cleaner and removing oil/residue from engines/transmissions? It works very well on oil and such but is it corrosive to the metal?

Kind of a waste, though. Buy some engine cleaner. Cheap, and works well to clean up the baked on crud. Engine should be warm to work the fastest.

One can will do what 3 cans of brake cleaner will take off.

Not all brake cleaner is the same, some will eat paint, others eat plastic. Use the good stuff, not the cheapest. If it smells like the dry cleaners, it's probably ok. If it smells like carb cleaner, ask for a better product.

I buy brake cleaner in bulk now and use a pump and spray bottle. You waste way less...
