Default My ghetto DIY catch can

My PCV valve was screwing up.After reading on many sites that boosted cars should do away with it, I decided to try. I don't have any proper parts, so I figured I would DIY it. Total cost was $25 for everything from Lowes. I'm going to paint it and get the proper plugs and such.

All PVC is 2", I ended up only needed one of the hoses. Make sure you have an adapter for the PCV breather, this stuff is too small.

Drilling the holes for the fittings in the threaded cap

Finished product. I'm going to fill it with some steel wool or something and make a baffle between the hoses if I have to.

I made a simple L bracket and bolted it to an existing hole and used a worm clamp to hold it on.

Pretty much finished.

Where would I get a proper cap?

Looks clean actually for such a ghetto diy. Keep us updated to know how it works, if so I might do the same thing.

That's not too ghetto. I used to have one that I made out of an empty can of Sea Foam. Complete with steel wool inside and sealed with JB Weld.

I just drove the car for a couple hours, no more smell. Not a drop of oil on the lines either. This solved my hesitation when on throttle and now the idle is super smooth. I changed nothing else besides the PCV system.

Advance caries rubber vac line caps and plugs in assorted sizes fyi. That is pretty clean - I may also go that route if driveability is improved - altough emissions inspection here may not like that - but you do retain a PCV valve and I think that is the only requirement.

Could you have just capped one of the two breather nipples on the VC and just ran one line to the catch can? This is one of the next things on my list of to-dos. Just curious if it is really a necessity to have both lines. Clean DIY though!

Thanks, I'll hit advanced tomorrow.

It is important to note that my PCV valve did not work properly. I decided to go this route because 90% of the diagrams I found online said this was the best way for FI. I'm not sure how well a working PCV in the stock setup would work with a can on the breather side as I never ran it that way.

This seemed the easiest and most recommended way. In fact I found several diagrams of pre-PCV system engines and this is pretty much what they ran.

In all my searching I never found a diagram with one breather blocked and the other to a can. I have heard people have set it up that way. But I never found an article or diagram recommending it.

Just curious, and dont take this as flaming cuz looks like a nice diy job AND I have most of the parts sitting in a draw waiting for me to do this, BUT....

Anyone ever consider one of these??

Both holes relieve pressure if any were to build up in the crankcase. Therefore, don't block them. FWIW I ALWAYS smell oil coming from my motor, and I know it's from the PCV and other breather thing that are just dumping under the hood. Hell, I might do something similar to what you did. Only I would mount the canister in the fender well out of sight and out of the way. I have enough stuff in the engine bay already.

As long as the quality is good it would be fine. I was going to order one, but I had to go to Lowes to pick up some pavers anyway and I like building things. I'll get a real one soon.
