LOL, this reminds me of 'WAY' back when my buddy amp’ed a household speaker in his trunk (at least it had a big woofer, mid range, and a tweeter) and when anti thief car stereo meant you have the take the whole unite with you... Definitely not the greatest, but it worked. Oh those were the good old days.
You get a 6 out of 10 (point for saving money but deduction for ghettoness). Seriously though, how does it compare to 'other' 3.5 HR speakers? I just put 3.5 Infinity and they sound awesome! Very clear, but lack base.

LOL! Yep, pretty ghetto. Seriously, the max5 speakers are only 80 bucks and thatn ain't bad for four speakers made just for the miata. I've got some 6inch kenwoods in the doors and an 8inch bazooka tube that are being powered by a 4ch kenwood amp. The max5 head rest speakers are only powered by the head unit and I have the fade way down on them to the point where they just provide some "filling in" of some of the mid and treble frequencies.
The bazooka tube provides some bass but everybody was right about that trunk not being a very good place for a subwoofer. I have a 10inch bazooka in the trunk of my 65 mustang and that thing is awesome!

double post. The only problem I see with that is seat adjustability..I mean if you have to have the chair slid way back to make leg room that means less tilt back space. Adjustability in passenger side obviously isn't as big a deal as on driver side but still.

The problem with "cramming 3.5s into the foam" is the soundwave from the rear of the speaker cancels out the soundwave from the front and you loose low/mid output. The original speakers had little plastic cups that served as a sealed "cabinet", if you will, that asorbed the soundwave from the rear. The OEM stereo had a crossover on the headrest speakers. I believe the Mazda original headrest speakers were only 5watts. If your using an aftermarket stereo these speakers will be night and day IF you use the cups. The sealed compartment also serves as dampening for the cone to prevent overexcursion. The freq. responce graph on those Parts express speakers show that there playing up to 20khz but output drops off somewhat. There conservativly rated. Oh, also for aftermarket stereos, find a "bass-blocker" somewhere in the 150-250hz range (at 8ohm rating) and you will having no problem running 50+watts to these speakers.

PSS- I need OEM speaker cups!! If ANYONE has the old ones from there car PLEASE sell them to me.

interesting... I dont really use the headrest speakers for anything other than tweeters, the alpines in the doors produce enough bass for me, plue the music I listen to isnt very heavy on the bass anyways...the headrest speakers get plenty loud and sound great.
I'd give you the speaker cups if I knew where they were
maybe I will make some for the 3.5's to see what happens..

I just got the headunit in tonight. My headrest speakers are 3.5" at the moment. During the install I test each speaker for correct phase and I have the feeling mazda has the headrest speakers wired in series, aka "mono" Maybe whoever put the 3.5" in there got some wires crossed but they run thru the foam so I don't see how. Either the positives or negitives were swapped. Once I figured that out holy cow was that a difference. Anyways... They never were designed to play bass. Bass being <125hz. Vocals on the other hand >125hz are very important as those frequencies add fullness, volume, and fill to the sound. Suprisingly these 3.5" are playing it without any "enclosure". I'm an audiophile so I'm just picky.
