Question Hey everybody! Need some advice.

okay. to start off, my name is justin. i'm new to the miata platform. i was big into the toyota mr2 turbos for a while, but i wanted to get onto a lighter platform, so here i am! now, i'm in the process of rebuilding my miata's 1.8l and while i've got it apart, i'd like to get a turbo bolted up to it, but i have some questions. first off: what kind of boost can a stock 1.8l take? my mr2 on stock internals could handle around 400, but i'm not looking for anything near that. secondly, what type of turbo should i use? i had a t67 on my mr2, but like i said earlier, i'm not looking for that much power... i'd like to hit 300 hp out of this gocart ,(jk. i said that to somebody one day and they got pissed. lol), if possible. can the miata even handle that kind of power on stock internals? also, looking for some rec. on rims... when i bought my miata, it came with these gaudy chrome 17's. i'd like to find maybe some wide 16's or 15's that can handle high speeds without shimmying so bad. Btw, i'm a horrible speller, so if i mispell something, sorry about that. what brand of exhaust would you guys rec? any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
-Justin

look. i'm not just some kid who's trying to do everything as cheaply as possible. i'm going to do everything a do it right. i learned with my srt4 not to go cheap, and then i did my mr2 the right way. now i'm just looking for a lighter car, so that i don't need quite as much hp. please, if you just plan on just bashing me, please press that little blue back button on ur monitor. i'm just looking for advice, not an *** chewing. and for all of you that have posted with information, thank you so much for your help. i've been reading left and right all all kinds of different forums and i've read different information at all of them, but you guys sound like you know these cars like the back of your hands, so thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

So I am told 250 on pistons. 12 psi dependable. 15psi your pushing it. For most instances 200-250 hp. Some guys take it over the top like Paul, Ben and Brainack etc.
I've heard 13.9's are common, 13.5's are fast. And everything else is just about built motors. I've been told that these cars do well to 250 after 300 things start breaking alot. People usually change over to a torsen rear-end, due to exploding theirs.

If you haven't noticed I've just heard. My car is in the process. So if I screwed up anything or information.
Don't blame me . YOu should of searched.

I get these too at times. I do search. Sometimes there are so many post to look through after an a while I just ask. That is more understandable.

Best thing to read to answer your questions is Brianacks post for DIY ANSWERS ALL IN ONE Big post. It is under DIY turbo section. This helps alot. I still read it from time to time.
Good Luck...

The ability to make power on the BP motor is a function of a big-enough turbo, adequate cooling, and a good tune. 300whp is do-able on stock internals just not for long.

A "mild" motor build is around $2500. $4000 gets you ballah status.

Don't forget a clutch, brakes, suspension, safety (rollbar), gauges, fluids, motor-mounts, dif-mounts, fuel pump/filer, radiator/fans, and about 10 other things you really need to support that much power in a Miata.

Popular exhaust is a 3" Enthuza.
Big GT28 or smaller GT30 for you power goals.
BEGi Series 4 manifold and custom 3" DP
The only choice for rims are 6UL's.

ECU depends on your funds. Popular choices from cheapest to most expensive:
Megasquirt
Link (used)
Xede
Hydra

I highly suggest you drive few Miatas with different power levels. Your MR2 was portly at about 2800lbs when compared to a fighting-weight Miata at 2100. 200whp goes A LONG way. Corky says you need to check the wind direction first before you stomp on a 300whp Miata.

NOW that I spoon-fed you all that ****. Do yourself a giant favor. Go through every forum we've got here and read all the sticky's. Then go down to the USEFUL SAVED POSTS forum and read ALL of the ones in there that look interesting to you. Then go to the OFFICIAL VENDORS forum and go to ALL of their websites and look around. Then fill out your signature with the year of your car and a short list of mods already on it or I will e-thug your ***** flat.

There is a simple answer to your question. How much $$$ you got?

300 whp with supporting mods is going to cost some coin:

$3500 Turbo (say you bought a kit)
$1000 standalone and WB
$500 clutch + PP + Flywheel
$200 injectors
$100 motor mounts
$500 exhaust
$600 roll bar
$900 Torsen
$200 Assorted gauges
$1000 rims and tires
$1500 suspension and bushings, braces
$150 brake pads

So got $10,000?

Just tired of hearing about "WA WA WA... I want mega Hp but I got $100 what can I do? I'm a college student...."
Have a realistic budget! Or your just a dreamer!

If you want a convertable, major fun factor, and a crazy handeling car, they are great. Im sure a 400hp MR2 will mop a stock internal miata up in the quarter. But mabe not on the circuit.
One of my favorite You tubes is Miata Vs Viper. Or vise versa. It should come up anyways.
The viper gets passed in the curbs by the miata. Only winning in straight aways.

Would anyone on the forum happen to be that person?

@80psi I am making 800hp on my stock internals on the tiny little 1.6 bad-boy. If this info doesn't help you ask hustler, he has all the answers and the fastest cars.

thanks for all the help, and you'd be right about my old mr2. lol. it would murder my miata in the straights, but there is NO WAY that it could take my miata in the corners. the handling on this car is REDICULOUSLY good. anyways...i have a friend and he just put a supercharger on his 03 miata and he's putting down around 215 hp and i think i will just shoot for 250hp. just a little more than his. don't get me wrong, 215hp pulls nice, but i want a little more out of mine. thanks for all the help guys!
