Default Goodwin Carbon Clutch

Here is your complimentary thread, discuss:

YES, you can have it all....full carbon ability to HOLD all the power (300 Ft/LBs!) but with a pedal that feels like stock! You will feel the difference coming off every corner.
This is the first and only fully rebuildable carbon Miata clutch on the market currently.

Smooth engagement!

This is a single disc carbon/carbon clutch with a Billet Aluminum flywheel. It uses a stock style clutch cover but the friction plate is a light weight Billet Aluminum piece to replace the steel casting. Just by doing this we save 3-4lbs along with almost 2 lbs in the disc. The lighter the disc the less wear and tear on the trans syncros! Carbon has to rub against itself so this new friction plate has a carbon surface screwed into it. The disc is carbon on both sides, which makes for very smooth engagement. The flywheel is aluminum and uses the same style carbon inserts as the friction plate. By building the clutch this way it is completely rebuildable by the customer out in the field. All they have to do is install new carbon pucks in the flywheel and friction plate and replace the disc at a cost much less than a new unit.

BRIAN'S APPLICATION NOTES: This is the clutch and flywheel combo we use in our supercharged MX5. Pedal feels much like stock clutch, no heavy pedal here yet it works great for those with 12psi and more! This is a great choice for those who are stock hp now but planning to race or add boost. All the clamping ability of a full race clutch but as friendly to drive as stock replacement.
How much are the replacement parts?
How does the service interval compare to an organic or metal clutch?
Why no sprung hub?
What kind of warranty coverage on marcel springs and pressure plate "finger" springs?

We worked with the folks at RPS (famous for their high RPM S2000 clutch kits). Thus, you can read feedback for hours on the RPS carbon clutches over in the S2000 forum, duty cycle, cost of replacement bits, etc. Bottom line is that my little wife is 110 pounds and could not drive the ACT clutch in our 300 hp supercharged autocross toy. She burned up two ACT Heavy Duty clutches in just a few months and wiped out the starter when she filled it with clutch shavings because the pedal was just too heavy and difficult for her. At that point we went on the hunt for something even my 110 pound little wife could drive. So, when you ask why no sprung hub, the answer is: because you just don't need it with this design....it really is THAT EASY to drive, feels almost stock...yet is the lightest NC clutch/flywheel combo on the market that I know of....and it holds all the power.

No springs because carbon is sproingy? absorbs vibration?

What is total weight?

Well, it was, since "it's the lightest NC clutch on the market."

I have now taken the time to peruse the website, and see it listed in the 1990-2005 clutch section, so I retract my question.

I feel it was fair, however, given the above response, and the pictures of the NC. Of course, I should have known that you would not post the question had it not been relevant to your vehicles.

I think there is a vast misunderstanding of what sprung hub clutches accomplish.

Your driveline doesn't care about tiny springs. I promise.

Whats the life expectancy on one of these? I ask because a friend of mine had something similar on a vw and it lasted all of 6months street driving.

Your input shaft splines might. Unsprung discs can lead to premature wear of these splines, especially if it's an unsprung dual disc clutch, and will certainly increase the effects of driveline chatter/vibration everywhere down the line.

It's a single disc....not a dual.

"something similar" strikes me as meaningless unless it was an RPS carbon clutch.

Regardless, I easily have over 1000 hard launches on the original in my car with no issues.
