Default Data logging in Hydra Sofrware

Newb question here. My new Hydra system is working pretty well but there are a few issues ( oscillating idle sometimes, occasional flaky tach ). I 've been following known solutions and making some progress, I think, and learning the interface a little.

I understand and that asking for help with being able to post logs is kind of pointless, but I haven't found out how to data log, which things need to be logged, the frequency that is needed for a good data log or much of anything. I have found the internal data logging but assumed that it woulD be fairly limited in capacity. Can anyone point me to "Data Logging 101"? I've looked and found very little information that makes sense to me. Like where in the menu I can get to the options needed, does the laptop need to be connected to a running car before the options pop up? Or merely connected to the Hydra?

Thanks,
Paul

Have you read FM's Hydra tuning document? I'd start there. If it doesn't make sense, your next best choice is to call FM and ask Jeremy.

That said, I've done it with 2.5. Basically you hook up the laptop and select "start logging" from one of the menus. Bump up the data logging rate (it doesn't remember it for some reason) to the fastest it'll go, somewhere around 10 Hz. Collect data until you're done, then "stop logging" and save it as a CSV file that you can import with DataLogLab.

I suspect 2.7 may well be different (they changed a LOT between 2.6 and 2.7), but I've never used it.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've read everything that I can get my hands on and have e-mailed Jeremy. I haven't been able to find a command in any menu relating to data logging. There IS internal data logging but I imagine that the memory available is pretty limited. I'll give Jeremy a few days to reply and then call.

There red are a few other issues that I contacted him about and it would be handy if he had my e-mail when I spoke to him so he'd have all the pertinent info at hand.

By the way, I went around the EBC and reinstalled my manual boost control and have resolved that problem. May try EBC again down the road after everything else is sorted and I'm more comfortable with the software.

It looks like 2.7 only logs internal, not over serial, and is limited to 8 logging channels so you have to select what you want.

Can you tell me where you found that info? I'm trying to get as informed as possible so I don't have to bother people with questions that I could find myself. I just haven't been able to find much of a manual. The one on FM's website is pretty limited and the Hydra website isn't much better unless I'm missing something.

8 logging channels....and is the frequency a factor in how much data is contained? Kind of like megapixels in a graphic file?

If you go the FM site, under "support" / "instructions" they have:

https://www.flyinmiata.com/support/i...2.7_Tuning.pdf

The bottom of page 18 and top of page 19 have a paragraph about data logging. It talks about the internal data logger and how to configure it.

I am surmising that the internal data logger is the only logger, because there's no mention of any other form of logging. 2.5 had a menu entry "tools" with "start data logging" in it that started the external logging on your laptop, since Jeremy doesn't mention it in this one I'm assuming it's gone.

I don't have a copy of the 2.7 tuning software, but looking at the screenshot at the bottom of page 19, there's a slider labelled "channels" which has 8 possible positions. Since Jeremy talks about the need to select which channels you're interested in in the descriptive paragraph, I'm guessing this is how you configure how many there are. The example screenshot shows 8 traces.

I would guess that if you poke around on that screen there's probably an option to download an internal log file from the on-Hydra flash storage to your laptop so you can display it.

2.7 does not have external logging capabilities - just the onboard internal memory logging.

a) The 8 channels are user selectable and the list of variables to log are numerous. You could ask Jeremy for a list or start with a few that you know are important to you. AFR, knock, load, rpm, coolant temp, air temp, etc. The names of the variables are something you will have to begin learning because you look for what you want through this available list on the internal datalogging screen.

b) Yes - the sample rate is like megapixels in graphics. The more samples you wish to pull, the more you use up your internal memory AND the heavier the datalog file. So - say you wanted an extended log from cold start to completely warmed up 210* coolant temperature - then you may want to sample at a lower rate to effectively have enough memory space. And yes - you have to leave your laptop connected to the Hydra and click start on the internal datalog to begin your logging. Hence why Hydra prefers you use a partner in the passenger seat!

c) You could use a built in aux port to switch logging on and off - without a laptop. The only thing is - you have to connect your laptop, get your sampling rate and variables selected that you wish to log and then disconnect/put away laptop. I have personally not tried this yet but am going to this winter when car is down and out. Here's a YouTube video on the subject -

Thank you Codrus and Miataki. I have dug deeper and been learning and getting a feel for the software. Jeremy responded to my questions as well. Some of the issues that I was having I may have resolved today by removing and thoroughly cleaning the throttle body and intake air control as well as cleaning pretty much every sensor connection and ground. After the throttle body recalibration ( I got slightly different values after the cleaning ) the car idled much better and tachometer worked reliably on a half hour test drive.

I did a test data log and have the process figure out somewhat and will be able to capture any misbehavior should it arise.

Thanks again,

Paul
