Hmm... I love what I do - sit around and drink beer, fix an ultra-low or two, make a service call every now and then - but the REAL hope comes in designing or selling something motor-sport related so I can DEDUCT 20K a year on miata hop-ups and go-fast goodies as a business-related hobby - I mean expense

It's honestly not all that bad near Lake Forest where the shop is. You can get a 3/2 house with a garage for $250-$300k, which is about than half of what you'd pay down here in Carlsbad.

SoCal probably has the highest spread of real-estate values from one town to the next of anywhere short of the NYC area.



Agreed that it should be ****-grabbing, but thundercunt seems like a non-hyphenated word to me. Take ThunderCats as an example.

I took that "dream job" working on race cars (and the occasional exotic).

Spent 6 years getting jack pay and generally screwed by owner of said business in any way he could think of (and he's a smart guy). I went back to the boring old shipyard where I did my apprenticeship for a 31% outright pay raise, better benefits, and a 25% lower cost of living. Ya it rains a little more in the Seattle area than in the SF Bay area but it's a small price to pay for actually both having the cash for track days AND being able to take time off between March and October... the prime racing months. What I was doing didn't get old, dealing with the owner got old, not having cash or time off for things I liked to do got old.

Moral is... not every dream job turns out to be one.

Not saying Emilio or 949Racing is anything like this... everything I've read and heard says otherwise in fact. If I were looking for an entry-level type position and I were a rabid car guy I'd be checking it out.

Edit: I'm looking at moving back to Arkansas next year and have my eye on 56 acres for 100k lol.

The tiny (though good condition) apt I had in an old building in a lower rent area (East Bay-Hayward) was $850/mo. I'd expect similar prices anywhere near civilization in SoCal.

I have a 700 sqft apartment in a nice nieghborhood with an attached 1.75 car garage, and it's about $1,500 / mo.


I have actually been looking at houses lately, what with mortgage rates and prices being what they are. There are some very nice 3-car homes in the San Marcos area available in the $380-$400 range.
