I've been looking for door speakers and stumbled across CowBoom.com. It's a clearance/reman/scratch & dent/returned item site for Best Buy. They list everything that's missing or wrong with the items, and what I bought listed everything except the mounting hardware as included (which was in the box after all). All the original packaging was in the box, manuals, etc.

I picked up a set of Polk DXi650's for $38 shipped, and upon arrival they look brand new, no cosmetic issues at all, and only one speaker had ever been removed from the packaging. It has solder on the terminals, but otherwise looks perfect.

I'll report back after I get them installed as to whether they sound damaged in any way. If not, it's a screaming deal on these, and they had another 4-5 pairs for sale.

A pair of these showed up on my doorstep yesterday. The drivers are massive compared to my stock speakers!! Like, 6x the size.

As I was looking though, I kind of now want to get these:

We'll see how the JAMOs hold up.

Well you got the shielded driver. It's got a second magnet to prevent your old CRT TV from distorting. Not sure why you have a CRT in your car though...

CRT touchscreen, duh. No I debucked them so they would fit better. They sound good, and I have bass now.

How good? Would you buy them again? Hooked up to an amp? Do you run those with just a set of tweeters?

I actually have the originally specified $7 JAMO driver in my car now. I was actually driving home tonight thinking how nice they sounded even without any EQ.

I like them a lot.

This is a pretty close cousin if you want a dirt cheap 6.5 that will sound good in a miata:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=299-908

cross them over between 3-4kHz to a tweet.

Idk, they sound very clean and warm, and I like their frequency response. For 7$ea, they're good speakers, so sure. You will need a pair of tweeters and a crossover if you use them. Get the ones y8s linked so you don't have to bother with shielding.

Ideally I would like to lay some insulation and get enclosed speaker cases like this guy does:

Got the $38 Polks in earlier today. No problems with them at all, and they sound fantastic even with my mid-level Pioneer HU.

Big thanks to NA6C-Guy for mentioning them earlier in this thread...may not have had them on my radar otherwise.

Lets talk head units now. I have a JVC that I really like but have no real use for since it isn't compatible with my iphone. All i listen to is espn radio and pandora. Ideally I'd like to be able to hear my iphone through my car stereo speakers.

Any suggestions?

I am curious about the Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X994...

Nice looking radio, one concern is that when hooking up your phone or ipod can you only control it via the radio?

I'm pretty sure that my iphone will hook up to the connector on mine. I haven't tried it yet, so I'm not 100% sure on that.

Some of the newer ipod style connectors will work with iphone, but I think most older ones don't.

So my $7 speakers arrived today. I pulled the door panels off and the speakers are to small. Why didn't anyone tell me the NB's use bigger speakers? ********!
