Joe--I agree w/ you. For a 2M run, typically any non-broken hdmi cable should be fine, and usually whatever comes in the box is fine. But if you're going to do hi-rez over a long distance, or if you're going to need to prewire or otherwise run a cable through a wall, get something good. the hdmi gear cables are the only "budget videophile" cables that I've worked with that are reliable to send 1080p to JVC DILA projectors over long runs.

Loki, which denon?

I say you go with the Denon.

I personally am not an Onkyo fan.

I wont buy another sony amp again. just no warmth. like it had some EQ from the factory or i dunno.
mine eventually went into PROTECTION mode and never came back.

the denon was a serious improvement over the sony.
my denon is currently getting repairs made. some day I'll get it back.
I was really happy with the Denon and wouldn't have considered replacing it other than for future features like HDMI passthru or switching but since I dont have an HDMI capapble TV, it stays. It's a 2805.

if that doesn't happen, I may pick up the onkyo ben keeps talkin up but i'm not sure on the sound of the onkyos.

problem is, at the 3-500 dollar price point, the differences are small and you're in the "mass market" segment. it's similar to how it was with TVs under 27 inches. cheap and easy to make drove the design. sell an assload and make some margin.

seriously find a real home theatre shop that sells all of these and take your favorite cds. a place like Tweeter or Magnolia (not one in a BB) or something like that is bound to be near-ish to you. Have them set everything "flat" or turn all the EQ off or use a "direct" mode and listen to the same speakers for each receiver. a good store will already know what you want to hear.

Loki,
You're in Chicago. Go to CC, buy the ones you want, then return the one you like least.

I love my HK crap, but it's pre-HDMI. My projector doesn't have HDMI anyway, so it's no biggie.

We used to rent a space to a high end audio store

http://decibelchicago.stores.yahoo.net/

and I used to go in there to mess around (and buy stuff at cost). But i never heard a difference in any of the equipment. The speakers were really where I heard the difference.

I want to have some options when I go to the store, so im only looking at a handful instead of every amp in the store

Sony is off the list.

good news. my denon is fixed and so far passing final testing.

the difference in amps is much smaller than the difference in speakers for sure. you can tell a difference in some and that's how you know to avoid that brand.

These entry level models you keep bringing up don't (IMO) really support your long term goal. I say either (1) get something CHEAP like an old prologic surround receiver + seperate hdmi switcher (total expenditure under $75) or (2) go ahead and go big now ($800+).

As you know thats the route I was going to go (800+) but i cant justify that money when I cant hear it.

If i get something other than the receiver with it built (swticher) i Have to buy new cords for the ps3 and stuff to get the audio to the reciever.

FOr 400 hundro i dont know if i can really go wrong. So you see anything blaringly wrong with it?

The audio cable you'd need is just a regular stereo m-m rca. It probably came with the ps3.

The onkyo HT-S894 is the 604 just with 5.1 instead of 7.1, and it does transmit audio and video via the HDMI cable (its 1.1 not 1.3) Ill post a review of when i get it. In case anyone else is looking for a cheap HTIB setup

1.3 main advantages:
supports Deep Color--up to 48bit color vs 24bit
more than double datarate--10.2 vs 4.9 Gbit/second
automatic audio-->video synching
supports DTS_HD, TrueHD

Yeah i read that, but I am going to see if I can tell the difference when it comes. (48 v 24 bitrate)

But i thought we weren't anywhere near the datarate max (I mean watch a full standard dvd in 1 second?)

The video syncing might be an issue, see it when I get it.
