I just watched Cell 211 the other night. Spanish, with subtitles, and a damn fine movie.
And then, there's Instinct, with Anthony Hopkins.
Seven years in Tibet.
Babe - yes, the one with the pig - the first one.

As good as it gets
Do the right thing, along with pretty much all Spike Lee movies.
Avatar, for a tip off the hat to Cameron, for getting 400 million dollars from the man, and laughing at the face of the all the war mongers.

Avatar? Honestly, I wanted to shoot James Cameron's dog after forcing myself to sit through that predictable, formulaic piece of ****. Very pretty to look at, to be sure. I was trying to figure out where the matte lines were on the CG faces, before I finally learned that there weren't any, because it was all CG. And I respect that. I've never seen human-like faces done in CG so convincingly that I honestly thought it was a composite.
But it was still utterly unwatchable.

X2 for shawshank redemption. My most favorite movie.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Donnie Darko. Some think its overrated, but its still a good movie. Watch the directors cut if you're only going to watch it once. It makes more sense on the first viewing than the theatrical version.

+1 Hudsucker Proxy, Cinema Paradiso, Shawshank Redemption (hardly an obscure movie)
It occurs to me that many of the guys here that are younger than me might not have seen some of the better films ever made because they haven't had ready access to them. Many of these are from before my time as well but are excellent and very worth watching.
Comedies that should be required: Stir Crazy (w/Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder; "That's right, we bad"), The Jerk (w/Steve Martin; it is where I found my "special purpose")
The Longest Yard (1974, Burt Reynolds)
The Longest Day (1962, All star cast incl. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Sean Connery; awesome movie but also should be required viewing for great historical content)
Three interestingly linked movies that would be good to see in order to fully appreciate the parallels:
Seven Samurai (1954, Japanese w/subtitles; often referred to as the greatest Japanese film ever made),
The Magnificent Seven (1960, western based on Seven Samurai; starring Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Yul Brenner, Eli Wallach)
The Three Amigos (1986, spoof based on The Magnificent Seven; Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short)
Young Frankenstein (1974, Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle (from Everybody Loves Raymond), Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr (one of young Elvis' girlfriends).
There are others, but this is a great start.

How about A Clockwork Orange? Sex and violence, late 60's style. Tame by today's standards, but shocking(and X-rated) at the time. Great film, brilliant satire.
Also, Midnight Cowboy - same vintage, great acting.

I was reading through the list and was thinking someone has to mention Idiocracy.
Nice to see a few of us were on the same wavelength this morning.
Watched Tron last night gearing up to go see the new one. Can't believe that movie is almost 30 years old, though the acting was sure on par for that time frame. :P

If you've seen, 'Life is Beautiful', then you may love the actor R. Benini in 'Johnny Stecchino' (Italian - great to read the subtitles since you'd miss the dialog).
Also, +1 for 'Layer Cake'. Very good if you like '******' and 'Lock, Stock, and 2 Smokin' Barrels'.
I think my sort of obscure ones would be:
1) 'Swimming With Sharks' (ultimate dick boss movie with Kevin Spacey)
2) 'Scratch' (documentary on scratching, DJing, etc. FRIGGIN' AMAZING even if you don't really like hiphop)
3) 'Step Into Liquid' (another documentary, but showing different facets of surfing. SOOOO good - even if you've never surfed)
4) 'Happiness' (okay, this is a twisted one...but some funny *** stuff. Especially Jon Lovitz cameo in the opening. Has Philip Seymore Hoffman and a bunch of others)
5) 'Drunken Master' (original w/ Jackie Chan. Great funny kung fu)
