No monitor (but I'll pick one of those up here in Germany at the PX to avoid shipping it, not b/c of cost because I have an APO address so it's cheaap but just b/c.) I've always had intel's because that's what everyone recommends and supposedly AMD blows hard, I want to keep it as small of a package as possible. I'd like to keep wi-fi if it's not too expensive of an option, looking at the $700 without the monitor, but would like to keep it as cheap as possible obviously. Don't game like I said and ~750GB HD should be more than enough.

This is what I've got so far with no idea whether this stuff is even compatible with each other or not...I think so though from the specs I picked through, still working on it though:

This ain't a bad laptop. I personally would go with a thinkpad over a Toshiba, but that is just me.

people buy toshibas because they are cheap. they hate them because they end up junk in a year because of all the bloatware and lack of quality.

you can always go dell business laptop from the dell outlet.
http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineS...=28&l=en&s=dfb

the Vostro shouldn't have a bunch of installed junk.

I've had this MSI laptop for about a month. Intel i3, 4GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive (enough for me), Win 7. I decided to pony up the extra $ for this one because it has the blu-ray combo drive. I've been pretty happy with it so far, uninstalled the Symantec trail/bloat-ware and just a few other unnecessary bits (not nearly as bad as what comes preloaded on most Toshibas) and have been using free Panda antivirus which seems to not hog quite as much RAM. It boots to the login screen in about 25 seconds and I'm on the desktop with a couple widgets loaded within 45 sec. Happy for now, and it feels like a decent quality product, so we'll see how it holds up after a few years. I will also say that while Win 7 does have some settings hidden in less than intuitive (to me) places, it does not seem like a complete raging piece of **** OS so that's nice. It probably helps that I haven't saddled it with too much extra software yet.

I love Windows 7, what my Toshiba had before I shred my beer with it. I freakin hated Vista and absolutely refused to use it for what it's worth.

Shuiend is helping me put together a nice compact desktop now, I'm pretty sure that's the route I'm going to go, there's still a possibility I'll go for another laptop though.

I've never bought a full Windows OS before, when I install it is it going to have a bunch of the usual bullshit with it or am I going to get a pretty "unbloated" system this way?

Interesting, it's all the same though..so who really cares, .

On a side note, I think I've decided on building my compact little desktop and try to leave laptops behind me. This decision will probably be regretted when I'm in Afghanistan though...oh well.

I builded you a compooter:

Motherboard (Gigabyte FTMFW)

CPU

Memory

Video Card

Hard Drive. Pretty standard. May want to spring for something with 32MB cache

DVD R with litescribe support

700W Power Supply

Might be a bit too fancy for what you're looking for, but if I were going to build a new computer, this is the kinda stuff I would be throwing in there. For a case, look into xoxide.com. They have, arguably, the coolest cases and mods I've ever come across. Not to mention a host of water-cooling products if you're looking to overclock that i7

A stock Windows install is pretty clean. You don't get any free trials of anything, no antivirus or antispyware BS, no Yahoo toolbars, etc. About the only frivolous crap that does get installed is IE (which you can't do anything about) and the cutsie little minigames that Windows has always come with, but those are harmless, resource-wise.

+1 on getting a mac. my 3 year old macbook pro is still holding its own as far as features and performance goes. although it cost me $3500 when i got it, it has paid itself off at least 20 times already

you can pick up a refurbished/slightly used solid body macbook for about $600. ive got one here and its badass.

If you buy business class anything, you'll probably be pretty happy with it.

I'm partial to Toshiba business class (Satellite Pro and higher), among my clients they seem to have the best track record of being rock solid.. I WOULD NOT buy an HP, especially lately they seem to fall apart in the first six or so months.

dont know if they ship but
www.microcenter.com

bought my acer last year with my laptop to a @#$@# during a Grad class. Teacher was looking at me weird when I was smacking my laptop in the middle of class.

was under 300 dollars and it works fine for internet, movies. I just mainly use it for surfing and work.

15.6 " lcd monitor, Athlon Amd 64, 2gbram, 160 gb hd, etc. Not top end but it does its job great.
