G-tech RR pro for sale on craigs locally. Anyone tried these? This version has drag info but more importantly road race info and the ability to datalog multiple sessions.

Any good? Crap? Obviously not the same thing as the high end GPS or real race dataloggers but this thing is only $100 bucks!

Worthwhile at all or useless? just wondering if it's accurate enough to let me learn something when I'm on the track.

Worthwhile, I had one of the original ones years ago (free with purchase of 4 Bridgestones!) and it was fun to play with. In order for it to work right it had to be perfectly level and you needed to know the exact weight of your car with driver.

Yes, it needs as accurate a weight as you can get to work well, but it's easy to setup.

Just put it where you want it, goto "drag race mode" and use the "pro lights" or something where it does a "tree" for you to go. Then just sit there after it says to go. End the run, and it is automatically leveled for you. No manual calibration needed.

I was hoping it would help with a couple of things. One I'd love to know what my car does on a skidpad for cornering g's and also braking distances. (These are just for fun so I can laugh or cry when I look at the numbers put up by 100K cars in R&T and C&D.) I already know what it does for acceleration. Right now I'm thinking my car is awfully close in overall performance to the Cayman S when I'm on street tires. Just wish my car looked that sexy...

More importantly, if the info is accurate enough, I hope it can give me useable feedback on the track. Learning to be smoother and consistant. If it's fairly accurate I can see where I can push harder, pushing to hard, inconsistencies, braking, lap times, etc. Just like autox, smooth is fast at the track.

I'd like to feel comfortable moving up to the advanced groups next year.

Supposedly an iphone with the dyno app is vastly more accurate without all the calibration bullshit.

if you are patient enough to wait about 10-12 months, im releasing one of those things but with ecu interface (several supported.) im planning to make it as low-cost as possible.

I have a similar product that I've track tested dead on. We made a few passes on a local street to measure horsepower then strapped it down to a dyno an hour later. Was +/- 0.5% on the dyno number. The one we're using is a Razzo that you can't buy anymore.

I've got one at it has been fairly accurate. They are accurate enough to give you info for changes and testing that you do and see pros and cons to anything different.
G's loads are a nice feature and on the spot data retrieval is good.
I am still working on track timing as compared to a transponder.
Don't worry about it being level, as you just subtract the difference when you are sitting at idle.
Mine reads .13 while being placed flushed in the dash, and that is what is subtracted from the final numbers.
I wish the HP wasn't measured from the tach, so I truly did have a 167HP NA.
That is alot of driveline loss if I am still 115'sh (guessing) or so at the wheels.
Anyways....it is a cool toy that I still use often.
And the shift lights are cool.

Thanks Machismo. I went ahead and bought it. For $100 I figure if i learn anything great. If not someone else will want it for that kind of money.

Now to start playing with it to see what it can do.

Cool.....it is worth the money for what it is. I still haven't utilized all the features it has to offer.
I love being able to switch from drag mode to roadrace mode on the fly.
The best thing I use it for are the highest g loads and RPMs reached per session. Lateral g's are nice, but acceleration and decel g's are a nice feature.

Apparently it picks up the engine RPMs from the cigarette lighter. How accurate can this be?

Tells me more than my "butt" dyno can.
A useful tool is a good tool.
As for accuracy, if I can shoot within 3 meters of a gnats *** from the moon, then its good enough.

I'm not so concerned about the rpms but how accurate the accelerometers are. If I can get consistent accurate readings for HPDE days with the datalogging I can see braking, acceleration and cornering all logged. Would make it possible to see where I am consistant and where I need work. Where I'm pushing near limits, past limits and not pushing hard enough. If the rpm's are moderately close that would be nice but not necesary.

Play with it a little bit, and you'll see.....
Let's say your sitting still and the unit is not exactly level, it may read .08 for accel and .01 for decel. Subtract base number from the number logged and there you go. Pretty accurate.
That is what I use it most for actually. Accel and decel to find out how consistent I am running.
