Well, it's not so crazy anymore. My Toyota pickup runs on anything from 86 to 94 octane. It's supposedly tuned for the higher stuff, but the computer changes things to use the lower ratings without knocking.

When I got the truck, I got about 23-24 MPG. Little did I know they had it filled with premium. I filled up with 87 (being cheap), and the mileage dropped off to 16-17 immediately. And that was me still treating it nice, because I just got it.

When I read up on it, I tested using fill-ups of 87, 89 and 92. Mileage is about 21-22 when I use 89 and am nice to it. Mileage is slightly better at the 92, but not enough to offset the higher cost. Mileage sucks when I use 87, and it isn't that much cheaper.

Because I am old and set in my ways, I use the same gas at the same pump at the same station. I write down the elapsed miles and gallons at fill-up, and have done so for decades. It's actually a great way to catch problems, because if mileage starts dropping off, you know there's something that needs attention.

what is an octane myth?
If you're implying that getting better mileage with higher octane is a myth, I'll disagree for the most part. Many cars out there will indeed get better mileage (not just power) with higher octane.

Ok maybe it was a bad example, even my 94 s10 has adaptive timing and can benefit from higher octane. You get my point though.

I have heard everything under the sun about octane. The general populous has no idea that its nothing more than a rating of a fuels resistance to detonation, so myth surrounds it.
